I know I write like I talk. I get accused of that every so often.
But....uhhhh....If the above was written like someone talked, I would expect that someone to
PASS OUT BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T TAKE A BREATH!!
Goooooooooood LORD. PUNCTUATION MAN! PUNCTUATION!!!

Ok well when marching band turns into lit. class I probably will be better at it but its not so I don't know why expressing ideas needs to be like a term paper. HA HA HA I'm just one musician talking to other musicians, color guard members drum majors ect. basically people who have a common interest in an activity that I happen to also participate in. Now that's just how i feel. and isn't this kind of off topic I just wanted to talk about
our drill writer who I personally think has an amazing talent wich falls under the topic who has a good drill writer!! So basically Mr. Shay is an awesome part of
our marching staff. THE END!!

OH ABSOLUTELY!!! Completely forgot about Oliver--great talent. SCV Cadets about 4 or 5 years ago...especially great drill out of him.
Mr. Bullock has written the drill for the past 2 shows at San Benito High School.

I think I need to correct myself as far as Vanguard Cadets. I think it's been Mike Zerbini at least the past couple years.

Leon May, of Avon H.S. in Indiana. That guy can write some wicked drill for fast paced shows and has great guard staging. Check out their 2005 show "Now and Zen".
Michael Gaines is...IMO, a hit or miss. I like half the stuff he does, but some schools he seems to half-@$$ it. His DCI stuff is normally entertaining and very creative, as is the stuff he writes for Carmel, IN., but some other schools he writes for (Kennesaw Mountain HS, GA., Plymouth-Canton Ed. Park., MI., and Homestead HS,CA) are not so good. Just my opinion, please don't take offense.

Take a look again at Plymouth Canton Ed. Park, in particular their 1999 show. I think Gaines is definitely in that top tier of drill designers. He writes for the talent level of the groups. It doesn't make sense to design a wicked hard show for a group that can't march it. Plymouth Canton can do hard and intricate drill (i.e. Cavaliers styled drill) Homestead (IMO) can do it, but not at the same degree... You'll find designers who have to tone it down for some schools.

Agreed. The top notch creative people, be they musical or visual, are experts at tailoring a program to the skill level of the ensemble they are writing for. I was extremely impressed with the drill Gaines wrote for Poway HS for their "Great Train Robbery" show (2005?).

A great designer, IMHO, can adapt to the needs and skill set of the group that he/she is designing for and STILL create an interesting, exciting program regardless of ability level.
In the years that I've worked with him, Oliver B has been fantastic at that. He picks the strengths and works with them, from beginning level to more advanced. Most of my experience with him has been on the color guard floor, but I've done a bit of field work utilizing his design. He's not "above" writing for a small, inexperienced program, and I think he strives to do the best he can to highlight a group's abilities.
Plus, I just like him a lot. He's a great guy.
BTW I wholeheartedly agree with Hostrauser. Tailoring the program to the group is the key.
