Boring?

Post by PGOK » Sat Mar 19, 2005 9:26 am

There is no boring music, only boring people. :^^:

Seriously....

Corsican Litany is a wonderful piece, but you have to get into the story and play it with the emotion it dictates. Col. Arnald Gabriel programed it frequently, if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me.

Pomp and Circumstance #1 is boring IF you are playing some terrible arrangement of the trio melody that repeats over and over and over and over and over and over and over. I know I've had to play or conduct it every year (sometimes twice) since 1970. Don't even think about not doing it, hot tar can be painful. Because of my bad experiences, I often have to "rediscover" it.

Chant and Jubilo? I hate to see people evaluate a piece of music based on their individual part.

Yes, I know this is all a matter of individual taste. My ultimate point is to not dismiss a piece of music as "boring" unless you have really explored what the music is about. :D

Pomp and Circumstance definetly is boring if you have to repeat it over and over. So far the record for our annual performance of it at graduation is 12 minutes I think.

I agree. I've never been completely bored with a piece of music, ever since someone that did a clinic with us said "When you think you really know a piece, that's when you're in trouble". So ever since then, I've been trying to look for something interesting in ALL the music we play, boring or not. Though I must say "Christmas on Parade" and our arrangement of "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" really tested my patience, but they didn't look like serious music in the first place.

i kind of like it when i have a boring part for a song or two, so i can listen to everyone else...
for example, when i first started playing, we had a song called Aztec Sunrise, where we repeated the same note of E in the pattern quarter, quarter, half for 26 bars or so. Although this seemed like the most boring thing in the world, it was really amazing to see the way the melody built, moving from flutes, to trumpets, to clarinets and see a countermelody form.
No regrets

We have this thing where all the feeder schools for our school come and play a concert, and one of the songs we all play together. Obviously it is very boring, because the elementry kids have to play it as well. It's called "Heroes of the galaxy". The event is pretty kool, but, as you can tell from the name, that song is pretty lame

Hehehe, it wasn't boring when I played it! :P

One piece that can be boring for the clarinet though, is The Tempest.

Actually, I agree that music can't really be boring.. unless it's played by a band that plays without any kind of expression.

I think NOT! I loved Chant and Jubilo. I loved my part (bari sax).

Pomp and Circumstance, however, is a totally different story... It didn't matter whether I played alto or bari sax for that song; I still hated it!!
