anybody been to the chicago Midwest band n' orchestra clinic

Post by raultorian trombone » Fri Nov 28, 2003 8:25 pm

Hey I'm in the James Logan High School Wind Symphony in Union City, California and I was wondering if anybody has gone to the Midwest Band and Orchestra clinic in Chigago, Illinois. It is an extremely prestigious event that happens every year around mid- december. I'm going this year and what you do is prepare an Hours worth of music that just got published to premire at this clinic and you of course have to get auditioned a year in advance. It is an event that only few have ever preformed in and it is rare for a high-school to go so I figured I'd ask if anybody has been to , or knows anybody who has gone because i want to hear what anybody has to say about it, Please supply any information if you've got it! Thanks so Much guys :D

I went in 2000.

Despite the snow and the cold (it is a WINDY cold) on the outside of the Hilton, what goes on indoors is truly a BLAST!!!!! You will see and hear some really good groups. You will meet some very important people (bring a camera - I met Alfred Reed, Johan de Meij, Frederick Fennell, Jan van der Roost, Philip Sparke, David Holsinger, Stephen Melillo etc. etc. etc.). You'll have fun going through the exhibition hall. I recall buying a number of wind ensemble CD's that you won't find anywhere else (don't forget to BUDGET your money). Keep your eyes open for free stuff too. The conference is mainly attended by music educators from all over the world.

It is not uncommon to find high school groups performing, much less middle school groups. There are some really superb ensembles.

Have fun and definitely meet some new people!
