Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds was cancelled here at UCI. So no more concert band until someone steps up in the music department.

Bands Cancelled

Post by MaxWest » Wed Nov 20, 2002 10:11 pm

That is indeed terrible news! For a college to lose part of its music program is horrible, I hope somebody 'steps up' right away.

It's not for sure, but some pieces Vista High is trying:
Titanic Saga~ Piet Swertz (pretty difficult)
Valdres~ Johannes Hanssen (different but fun)
Armenian Song and Dance~ Aram Khachaturian (really cool)
Aegean Festival Overture~Andreas Makris (difficult but awesome once perfected)
Irish Lullaby~ Scott Bulla (no technical demands but beautiful piece that centers upon balance, intonation, and musicality)
Life Dances~ William Himes (really fun to play)

8-)

I've played Valdres, and it is a very different piece. I thought it was a lot of fun at first, but it kind of played itself out and got a little boring to me. and i think I've played that Armenian song you mentioned, but i'm not sure if it's the same song. But if it is, that's also a fun one.

Here's what our Wind Ensemble played for our recent winter concert:
First Suite in E flat by Holst
Incantation and Dance by Barnes Chance
Consider the Uncommon Man by Holsinger
Sleigh Ride by Anderson

We will start playing a whole new set music now that that concert is over. I think some of them might be Masque by Kenneth Hesketh and Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli. This may not be right and we will probably also look at some other cool stuff. Mr. G could probably say better and he reads these boards.

[UCI]-Mike, that really sucks about your classes being canceled. I don't think I could bear going to school without band :(

Masque

Post by Jb7799 » Fri Dec 20, 2002 1:25 pm

There are two pieces called "Masque", one by W. Francis McBeth, which is pretty standard, and a new piece by the same name written by Kenneth Hesketh.

Redlands H.S. is doing the following:

Wind Ensemble: Konigsmarsch - Richard Strauss
October - Eric Whitacre
Havendance - David Holsinger
Folk Song Suite - Ralph Vaughan Williams
The Gum-Suckers March - Percy Grainger
Divertimento for Band - Vincent Persichetti

Symphonic Band: Hebrides Suite - Clare Grundman
On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss - David Holsinger
An English Celebration - James Swearingen
(I'm not sure what else they're doing)

I'm interested to know what everyone's playing, this is a cool topic!

I now have the acutal music for Maque, to practice over break (since it's also going to be our audition music for 2nd semester), and it is the one by Kenneth Hesketh. I played Hebrides Suite last year when I was in Concert Band and we also read On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss once I think.

Masque is a great piece, Hesketh also wrote a piece called "Danceries" which we did in Wind Ensemble at the Univ. of Redlands last semester. I think we might throw "Masque" on a program next semester. Dr. Smith seems to really like Hesketh's work.

Is that Third Suite written by the same Jager who wrote Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann? Our Wind Ensemble played that last year. I wasn't in it then but it sounded like a nice piece from what I could tell. Second Suite is also a nice piece, exept it is played alot. I played it in our county honor band last year.
