ADLA soloists!!!
I'll be thrilled to meet this exciting ADLA season's prospective soloists, especially on timpani and mallets. Can I ask you guys for an autograph?... just kidding.
Ahem... anyway, clearing my throat and act, I just want to see who's actually going to play solo for the ADLA season this year. As the 2002, 2003 timpani soloist I'll be more than pleased to shake your hands. Hope to see you at Bolsa Grande HS.

I'm going to do a mallet solo this season. Should be great fun!
EDIT: I thought of a question. Is it more common to play the same piece of music for every competition (in solo), or to play a different piece for every competition?

Replying the question.
Hmmm... good question, MalleTragic.
We soloists usually do a single piece and compete at least twice during the season. But it is possible to choose two pieces and play each of them twice or more. One of the soloists I know did one piece on mallets and other on timpani, so she had at least four performances to make before playing for the championship.
Don't be too greedy and try three or more though, because that may take away the space of other prosperous soloists. Not to mension egotistic about it.
Otherwize, you can ask Mr. Perry about the soloist stuff.
Thanks for asking.

I didn't mean to do solos in more than one category. I more meant, could I just do mallet solos for three shows, but play a different piece in each show? Like could I play a Musser Etude for the first, then Flight of the Bumblebee, and then part of Rhythm Song? Or is it customary just to do the same piece for all shows?

Hmmm...
Okay.... like I said, doing a single show and performing and couple comps is common. You have to play at least twice on a single show to qualify for the championships.
And I'm not sure if you could play THREE mallet solos in a single season, but you can ask ADLA officials about that.
If you can, you probably can do one or two shows on one comp, and the third one on the next. And since you have to compete twice to qualify, you'll probably need two more comps anyway. Or why might as weel just play all three at your first comp, and then try again on those three for the second comp. If you still want to play more on a piece, or not satisfied with your score, you can do that.
Like I said ( why am I saying it again?)... you can contact Mr. Perry if there is any more question.
Thanks. And best luck.

I'll be competing in the open division. My name isn't on the site yet, but I'll be competing at Villa Park and AB Miller. I can't wait to see the other soloists; last year at the VP show there was only one solo, but this year there are quite a few more, which will be really cool to watch.
