Legendary Drum Majors

Post by cyndaminthia » Wed Feb 11, 2004 10:04 am

Hey all,

I noticed SpinDoctor posted a thread of drum majors that impressed this season. How about for all time? Which drum majors would you consider *legendary*?

My picks:
Mindy Cabral - Thousand Oaks - 1997-1998
Preston Shepard - Glendora - 1998-1999-ish

And that one Montebello DM (ok, you guys can kill me for forgetting, but hey, I've been out of the loop for 5 years) from 5, 6 years ago (spindoctor, help me out here...)
Winning is not a tradition. Winning is something you earn.

Thousand Oaks Lancer Band 1996-2000
Drum Major 1999-2000

Hey Cyn,

Yep...those 2 were diffenetly of *Legendary* Status.

Tom Peacock? Everybody knows Peacock. I dont know to much of his history though.

Ben Schreoder of Glendora (1993-1996 I believe) is definiatly Legendary. He was all I heard about when I first started marching band. Everybody new who he was, even if you weren't involved in Drum Majoring. I never got to see to much of him but what I did see was awesome.

Mindy was another one that everybody seem to know.

All 3 Anderson brothers from Hill Top HS
Jared Anderson won Mace Apprentice, Majors and Masters in 1 year 1995
Jordan Anderson was the World Juvenille Champion 1998
Jacy Anderson Won Mace Masters 1997 & 2000

Michael Kim from Montebello (1997) was the most intimidating military spinner I've seen. The only way you could beat him was for him to beat himself. I love watching old tapes of him. Chris Mendoza (1998) was good too.
I never did forget that night...
And now...
More than twenty years later...
I still remember every note of the music that wandered out into the still night air.
The only thing is...
I can't remember how to play it anymore.

Legendary DMs...

Post by [D.m.P] Stealth » Fri Feb 13, 2004 10:06 pm

Well...this Drum Major was of pretty recent years, but I'm sure his name will be added into the books. When I first saw this guy...OMG was I amazed. When he first spoke at the first day of new marchers camp, the authority of his presence kinda shocked me. I was even more astonished when I saw him spin and take 1st place at every band competition he went to during the season, not to mention scoring a 98.4 at Mt. Carmel. I'm talking about Arcadia High School's 2002-2003 Drum Major, Ben Jiang. As a junior he won 1st place for all three divisions (Military Masters, Mace Masters, and Field Conducting II) at State Championships. Seriously, this guy was insane...he inspired me to spin and strive to become a Drum Major.

legendary...

Post by MaceDM » Wed Feb 18, 2004 11:33 am

Just want to add my $.02 ....

I’ve accumulated a list of great and possibly legendary mace drum majors (in the L pattern circuit). My video archives date back to 1991-2003, with some years of absence, and I have only included drum majors that I am confident were exceptional performers. Some drum majors excelled in different years or competed in different years, so, I have only listed the drum majors who performed the best those specific years. The years I have left blank, I either did not see any phenomenal drum majors or I have no record.

In order:

1992-(Toss up) 1)Butch Patterson - best presence and excellent execution
1)Kevin Kato - also excellent execution with more difficulty
1993- Todd Hinsbergen
1994- Joseph Paguio
1995- Jared Anderson
1996-1)Ben Schroeder
2)Jordan Anderson
1997-1)Jacy Anderson
2)Joseph Paguio
3)Jordan Anderson
1998-
1999-
2000-1)Jacy Anderson
2)Justin Paguio
2001-1)Justin Paguio (won throughout year)
2)Jason Paguio (won state)
2002-Anthony Nillaga
2003-

I would also like to list the judges who most accurately placed drum majors. I came to this conclusion by extensively watching tapes as much as possible and lining up the judges placings with the competitors performances and also found their comments to be the most accurate and knowledgeable. These judges have also had excellent students in addition to being great performers. All of them certainly deserve recognition.

In no order:
-Scott Thomsen
-David Cubberly
-Ryan Hanstra
-Wendy Tye
-Ben Schroeder
-Russ Sperling
-Mark Aguero

Scottish Games? Street Competitions?

Peace out

I told Holly that she was legendary. She had a good laugh.

Legendary DM's

Post by Danny1503 » Tue Feb 24, 2004 3:31 am

I am not really familiar with drum majors before my time but I would like to mention a few dm's that will probably be named legendary sometime in the future.

Ben Jiang from Arcadia HS (The only drum major who does long song's in solo comps. that I like watching)

Winston David from Notre Dame (Undefeated in Mace Majors for solo comp in 2002)

Manuel Castaneda an Independent DM (The guy who always wins 1st in Mace also last years state champion)

Janette Aldana from El Rancho formerly from North Park MS (She probably won more trophies in middle school than most people did in 4 years of high school. Was an awesome military and also one of the best female scotties I have ever seen)

And mostly every drum major to come of Montebello HS

Although I never saw Mr. Humpal, I heard plenty- and he also was DM for
the Freelancers.
I did see Jim- (hope I get all the details right...it's been a few years):
Jim was one of the first if not the first mace drum major to challenge what had
been So. Cal's lock on "the best" mace drum majors. Apparently there was a competition where Jim and the So. Cal. guy went head to head and Jim won.
At that time Jim was the drum major at Watsonville H.S. He later was drum major for 2 years at San Jose State. I believe he was masters champion also but don't know what circuit, etc. All on mace. 8-)

Does anyone know the name Joshua Boyd? He was Drum Major back in 96-97 for Rubidoux . I dont know if he is legendary, but I know he gave Michael Kim a run for his money both on the street and in L-Pattern.

I do remember Joshua Boyd. He took first place at the Bonita Vista DM Comp in 1997. I've got it on tape too. However Michael Kim was not there. I never saw Joshua do a parade.

Lengendary DM's

Post by they_call_me_tuba_sam » Mon Mar 15, 2004 8:28 pm

I have been in the drum major field competing for 3 years. I am currently one of the drum majors at Loara High School and am the only guy drum major. Ben Schroeder was the greatest drum major to every walk the face of the planet. Many people dont know his name anymore. He is currently a drum major for the Los Anegles Police Department Scottish Pipe Band. I had the great honor of studing under him for my first year out before he left the drum major world. The day he left was a very sad day for the drum major community. He even manged to make it on the cover of a USA drm major camp flyer. I have also had the great honor of compeiting against Ben Jiang. Ben Jiang was very good at doing some awsome tricks with his equipment but other then that was nothing. He was not very clean. He rutine was the same year after year with minor changes or some fancy new trick that wasnt clean. I thought he was a great spinner but other then that i really wouldnt consider him to be a lengend. I think in the next year or two every one will have forgotten his name.
Sorry if this affends anyone
