whoa, what's with schools in the garden grove district charging fees?! the principal at gghs told us that no one in the ggusd was allowed to do so because of the risk of being sued [i don't understand that, though]. so we weren't allowed to charge a cent. students had to get our own uniforms and the battery had to get their own sticks, but if you couldn't afford it, the boosters would pay. boosters also paid for busses since we never had enough parents to drive everyone. now i can't figure out if the district just doesn't like our band director [other things have been denied to us and granted to other schools] or if the principal, once again, lied to us.

fees...
There are different ways to charge. Ultimately the end result is the same - but our "fair share dues" are requested by the booster club - not the school.
You're right, suing is a possibility. No student can be denied a spot in the program because of failure to pay - but we have at least a 95% compliance rate. We request a very reasonable amount, taking into account exactly what our student body is capable of. Our letter is very clear on exactly what the funds are used for - this year we even asked for donations and received several hundred dollars from parents who were happy to help - they'd never been asked before.
By having the request come from the booster club, the school shouldn't be liable. At our school, the booster club and the directors get along incredibly well - teamwork is a vital part to the success of any program, right? If the leadership ain't happy, there ain't nobody happy.

we used to be allowed to charge fees. there was a $50 fee my first year, but most people couldn't pay it [yeah, we're poor like that]. no one has ever been denied a spot because they couldn't or just didn't pay. the principal went psycho about everything her second year there and wouldn't let anyone charge for anything. sports included. and then she imposed a one-fundraiser-per-year-per-group thing. and she included EVERY instrumental music group as the same group, so that totally sucks big toes. needless to say, everyone wants her gone. no one [including most faculty] much likes her. heck, one of our best teachers trasferred to our rival school [rancho] just because of her. so yeah. she's screwed pretty much everyone over a million and two times.
