Shouldn't band/guard be fun? It is up to you...

Post by vore » Wed Dec 10, 2003 1:28 pm

Rancho Bernardo HS is considered by most music educators to have the finest overall instrumental music program in Southern California if not all of California. The RBHS program has top performing ensembles in band, orchestra and color guard. The size of student participation for all ensembles is large in numbers.

I received the following from the band director of Rancho Bernardo HS in San Diego, and I present it for student and parent consumption:

(Guard members may insert the word performers for the word players and the word perform for the word play.)

"If you practice, you get better.

If you get better, you play with better players.

If you play with better players, you play better music.

If you play better music, you have more fun.

If you have more fun, you want to practice more.

If you practice more, you get better."

It's terribly sad when some people think band is just an easy A...

I hate how people try to join pit and do nothing to try to get an easy A.

I totally agree with that, most people don't realize that, and so they don't try as hard, which is a disappointment. But TMRsaxyDM has a point, band is fun either way, with or without good players and music (but that could be just because we're marching band nerds).

Getting back to the topic now...

I've always said if you don't enjoy band, don't do it. Granted some people are forced to do it by their parents...well those people should try to make the best of it. If you are going to be forced to do something, might as well enjoy it, right?

Interesting thought process..."if you are being forced to do something, you might as well enjoy it..."

I always use the motto...If you're not having fun, then what the he** are you out here for?" I mean really...and if you're not having fun, then ask yourself
"why?" Your answer could possibly tell you a lot...about many things.

Seriously...I mean if you have two people...standing next to each other, one is "focused," and the other is out to lunch and "over it," which will be easier to catch onto with regards to the rest of the band??? The latter...a Majority of the time.

Being forced to do an activity like marching band though...I haven't heard of such a thing. Maybe i'm still just a youngin with my eyes and ears closed though...

I don't get why anyone would go through all the work of marching band if they're not having any fun, why would it be worth it? You've got to be getting something out of it. And I hate people that just take band for an easy A and slack off, and hurt the rest of the group.

I knew quite a few people who were being made to do marching band because of their folks...I know it may sound odd, but things like this happen. Turns out those people just so happen to enjoy marching band (or so they did at my school).

As for the quote I put down..."If you are being forced to do something, then you might as well enjoy it"...perhaps forced was the wrong word. "If you have to do something, might as well enjoy it". I actually heard that from someone in my first year of marching band. I think it holds up...if you have no choice to do something, then might as well make the best of it.

Of course, thats just me.

Sidenote: damn...formermarcher past 1000 posts! YIKES! Does this necessarily tell someone something? kiiiidding.

Okay...that's interesting though formermarcher...about parents basically carving the life of a child, instead of say...presenting them with different paths...do this, or do that, as opposed to "would you like to do this?" Oh well...I guess this topic is dyiiin down.
