Always great to see a hometown group up in the top. Congratualtions Riverside Poly!
Also congrats to the other high schools that participated. Nothing but good things I have heard about in the 2003 season. Wish I could be there.
Now just eagerly waiting for the 5A results....

Because we went on so early I managed to see a few bands later in the show...
Glendora - Seriously, is Glendora ever not good? Today was no exception
Riverside Poly - Smokin'! Really very nice, and Oscar Mooring is one of the nicest band directors I have ever met. THe JFK quotes were a very sentimental touch, guys. Great show!
Hart - Absolutely, without a doubt, the best thing I saw all day. I made it a point to walk up to Mr. Bailey before we had the sheets to congratulate him on his second consecutive victory. Also an amazing person. One look at Mr. Bailey and his staff will tell you exactly why the kids at Hart are such good people.
Congratulations to everyone today. Oh, and Westlake...thanks for doing this one for you! You were stellar. Period.

It was a neat afternoon. A little chilly on the stands, all the heat was generating on the field. We saw some great bands this afternoon. Hats off to Hart and Riverside Poly, (be still my heart when the "Shaker" theme started, always one of my faves), and Glendora too.
Of course, being a little biased San Clemente did a great job today. They played their hearts out, entertained the crowd and "Raise the roof" (shows how old I am) to the Guard and Percussion.
2nd to percussion and 5th to guard, not too shabby considering all of the Bass Drummers came from other sections of the band, and the 10 member guard is half rookies.
I am soo proud of all of you, great show.

Congratulations to everyone! Unfortunately I didn't get to see any of the performances but clearly everyone did great. Congrats especially to Hart - I wish I could've seen your show!
I'm a little bummed at how Glendora did (we performed our best show of the year and got our lowest score and fifth place - now I understand peoples' complaints about SCSBOA judging) but, oh well. What can you do? Many thanks to everyone who had good things to say about us. It makes me feel a lot better. =)
And San Clemente, you guys rock! We sat below you in the stands before/during awards and we thought you were totally cool. My friends and I wanted to come up and visit but we weren't allowed to so we just sent one of our boosters up with some Smarties. We didn't know how to respond to your guys' cheer (the "we've got spirit, how about you?" thing) but you were very entertaining. Congratulations on doing a great job!
(by the way, I'm new - hi everyone!)

I was impressed
I went to the 3A show on Saturday. Or should I call it the Santa Clarita Invitational? I only say that because, 5 of the 10 bands were from the Santa Clarita/Simi Valley areas. I had not seen most of the performing units, but I must admit, I saw some really impressive performances. The Westlake show was very good. The ending was goooooood! Never seen anything like it. LaQuinta brought a soundstage on the football field! They had a show based on Beauty and The Beast and the pit was in the windows of the little "stores". You had to be there, I guess, too cute! Oceanside was another band I was impressed with. Nice overall show. But as was stated on a previous post, Hart was VERY impressive. When they finished, I asked myself, "I wonder do they know how good they are?" If SCSBOA abandons the championship format next year, I hope they revert to classifications based on skill level and not band size. That way, a band like Hart (and others) can DIRECTLY compete against comptetion that may push them to be even better. Hart, really should have been competing in class 5A. In my humble opinion. Thanks to all the bands for a job well done.

What can you do?[/quote] I saw all the 3A shows, and I think the placings were pretty much on the mark. The score may be lower because the judges are judging 10 bands in the same division, and you don't want to score earlier bands in the division too high, because you don't know what is going to be presented to you later and what score you will need to give that group. Glendora did have a good show!
Also, you have to understand, that the competitions in Southern California are more regional in nature. In years past, if one had gone to competitions like Chino, Arcadia and Los Altos, you would have seen ALL of the top bands, in every division, at least once. With budget cuts and higher traveling costs, a lot of bands are staying close to home more often. Thusly, a lot of the bands you don't get to see or compete against UNTIL the championships. So you really don't know what kind of competetion you are up against until you get there.
