grrrrrrr college drumlines and bands do have pit and we are font and center tahnk you! but what angered me the most (that ppl have said on here and im sure they are not in drumline or anything) we are not drummers WE ARE PERCUSSIONISTS!!!!!!!!! im a mallet/pit specialist but i also play snare timpani bass drum and cymbals and that goes for every PERCUSSIONIST in our marching and concert band and drumline. i take it offensively when someone assumes im a drummer because i have a pair of drumsticks and thats what that movie represented...a bunch of drummers nick cannon was a DRUMMER stereo typical drummer, couldnt read music and could only play things with drumsticks, us PERCUSSIONISTS play any thing that isnt a wind instrument, and play it well on top of that, they needed to tune half those drums anyway if they want to represent a true drumline they need to come to a high school or a college and watch what we really do, we dont sit like fools in the rain and do wall sits (unless we were being bad and not marching lol) we are percussionists not just drummers and we NEVER standstill or do lil crap dances on the field whilst playing .... ok im done lol srry
Dont touch me there your not a priest...

but I'm his illigatimate love child

This whole thread shows how closed minded people can be. But everyone has opinions.

I just went and watched the gold coast classic and the battle of the bands and well I have one thing to say, the bands down south really are unique. They have their own way of playing things and marching. If you didnt know, Some of the bands that competed had people that we in th movie drumline. But I will take our style of marching over theirs anyday. It's jus so like not serious, You've gotta be serious and have attitude instead of standing there and dancing. My point of view on the movie is yes it does point out how different the southerners are than us westerners but I dont think it relays the message of how difficult the band life can be. Thats my 2 cents. g'day :)

If you think of it this way, southern lines really do look like that, with the straps and everything. Wesern is different, much different. For the movie its self, i viewed it more of a comedy than anything else. Yeah, it was dirty beyond dirty, and it sure wasnt focused just on drumming. As for pit in college bands..... well, if your joining Berkely or USC, of course there is no pit. BUT, there are some exhibition lines, (such as sac state) that DO have pits. Cal Poly has a pit. Every college is different.

Schools in the west tend to be more military, more like drum corp. Southern schools.... no. Ive seen one or two exceptions, but all together the movie was somewhat accurate. Just one thing.... in the movie when two lines are competing, litterally, face to face, one line throws down their sticks at the end of their show. What are the chances the opposing line actually had that in their show as well? What also are the chances that a freshman will argue with his captain as much as possible? Not likely.

Personally, I didn't like the movie. But that's just my opinion, isnt' it?
no longer dealing with high school ^_^

color guard

Personally... I don't think how the kinda made the band's color guard look like the band's whores... i mean, it may be true in some case, but in many cases it's not. You have no idea how many people like i'm some chick running around the field dirty dancing, and then people add the fact the color guard uses flags. So many people that have never seen a color guard before think were a bunch of sluts dirty dancing on the field and were are an easy why to get some.... not true... in most cases.

That's what I'm saying, though. People at my school always think that band kids are such incredible losers who have massive orgies on our buses because we change together! Now that they actually like the movie, they think that being in drumline is cool - how can that be negative?
