Best CA Bands of the 80's?
Who do you think would be the best bands of the 1980's field & street and field-only, top 10 (arguably)? Your best guess? (VORE would probably know this.)

Live Oak H.S.
Mater Dei H.S.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that there were enough band review-only events, and many fewer field tournaments, that any list of the 80s top bands needs to also include a street-only version.

Thanks for sticking your neck out! (I welcome it.) I lumped the two together (field & street and field-only) because bands like Clovis West didn't really have the opportunity in their area to do band reviews, and I thought it would be unfair to say that if your band does BOTH you're better or have a disadvantage/advantage, etc.peapod wrote:I'm going to stick my neck out and say that there were enough band review-only events, and many fewer field tournaments, that any list of the 80s top bands needs to also include a street-only version.
But yeah, the 80's era, particularly for southern California, was field AND street a-plenty. (It was very important to be good at both to receive an invitation to the southern California Tournament of Champions, if I understand correctly. But that sort of fell by the wayside 1993 and beyond, and Arcadia has pretty much carried the torch in that regard.)

Amazing. I knew some of those bands, for sure (like Magnolia and Poway), but a wild guess for others. Thanks! I truly hope to see this book when it gets published (or shared). Would make for some amazing insight that not many of us have.vore wrote:Yup... I'd be one of the first in line to buy it. In fact, I'd even donate money in a Kickstarter campaign or something to have it come out by next year.peapod wrote:Vore - so happy to see you on the Marching Bands forum! Seems like forever. To get more regionally specific, we cant forget the pride of Riverside,. John W North... They were an institution in the IE in the 80s and then passed up by the pride of west Riverside,. Rubidoux!

Full disclosure - I am an Arcadia alum from 80-82 Long Beach parade band group.
The bands I remember being the most competitive were Poway and Mt Carmel. It's all a bit foggy at this point but those are the two I remember.

Redlands HS had a great field band under Patrick Winter in the early -mid 80's.

Arcadia should be on the list solely based on that 1982 Long Beach All Western Band Review performance of Shrewsbury Fair. Man, that video never get's old!
