Here's how BOA selects its semifinalist bands...

Minimum of 30 bands:
Top 11 from Thursday Prelims, regardless of class
Top 11 from Friday Prelims, regardless of class
Next highest 8 scores from either Prelims, regardless of class

Class Bonus bands:
The top 2 from each class in each Prelims is guaranteed to advance. Should any of those bands NOT be included in the aforementioned 30, they are added in, for a maximum of 36 bands.

Semifinals Scheduling
The Semifinals are designated to start at 8 AM Saturday every year. Any of the "Class Bonus Bands" are slotted before that. Thus, we can determine this year's Class Bonus Bands (finish Top 2 in their Class in their Prelims, but not Top 30 overall)...

7:00 AM – Beechwood H.S., KY
7:15 AM – Bellbrook H.S., OH
7:30 AM – Father Ryan H.S., TN
7:45 AM – Saint James School, AL

The Top 30 overall bands (Top 11 from each prelims plus next highest 8 either prelims) are then ranked by score. The bottom eight (#23-30 from Prelims) are the first four and the last four bands to perform in the regularly scheduled times. This year, they are

8:00 AM – Kiski Area H.S., PA
8:15 AM – Larry A. Ryle H.S., KY
8:30 AM – Jenison H.S., MI
8:45 AM – Miamisburg H.S., OH
...
3:45 PM – Adair County H.S., KY
4:00 PM – Milford H.S., OH
4:15 PM – Goshen H.S., IN
4:30 PM – Green Hope H.S., NC

The Top 22 highest scoring bands from the Preliminary rounds are then randomly assigned the "middle" 22 spots in the Semifinals. All 12 Finalist bands are virtually guaranteed to advance from this group...

9:00 AM – Franklin H.S., TN
9:15 AM – Ben Davis H.S., IN
9:30 AM – Lawrence Township, IN
9:45 AM – Harrison H.S., GA
10:00 AM – Homestead H.S., CA
10:15 AM – Dobyns-Bennett H.S., TN
...
11:15 AM – Homestead H.S., IN
11:30 AM – Blue Springs H.S., MO
11:45 AM – Keller H.S., TX
12:00 PM – The Woodlands H.S., TX
12:15 PM – Center Grove H.S., IN
12:30 PM – Keller Central H.S., TX
12:45 PM – Broken Arrow H.S., OK
1:00 PM – Centerville H.S., OH
1:15 PM – William Mason H.S., OH
1:30 PM – Lake Central H.S., IN
...
2:15 PM – Avon H.S., IN
2:30 PM – Carmel H.S., IN
2:45 PM – Round Rock H.S., TX
3:00 PM – Marian Catholic H.S., IL
3:15 PM – Hebron H.S., TX
3:30 PM – Bentonville H.S., AR

Exciting stuff. From this list I can tell the finalist bands will be: Hebron, Marian Catholic, Round Rock, Carmel, Avon, William Mason, Broken Arrow, The Woodlands, Homestead (IN), Harrison, Blue Springs, and Dobyns-Bennett (yes, from Tennessee!). My pick for the win: Broken Arrow.

Yay Homestead! It's great to have a Northern California band make semis! I saw them at the Am Can Regional and they were superb. I think having a regional in Northern CA is really going to push bands up here to strive for more. It's also great to get non/less biased judging than our local circuits can provide. I hope we have another Northern CA BOA regional next year. Go Homestead!

Looks like we match on 11 of the 12. I have Lawrence Township in, but they are in a cluster with Lake Central and Center Grove. I can see any of the three making it. Maybe you're right about Dobyns-Bennett, but I'm not convinced they're even the best band from TN in Semis (Franklin).

My pick for the win: Avon.

Congratulations to Homestead (Ca) for making semis and having a great run. Way to represent!

The ones that blew me away (other than the normal super bands) were:
-Hebron for amazing technical skill and an incredible tenor solo that brought the house down (seriously!). Maybe my favorite show ever.
-Bentonville for great production value and an appropriatly dark sound.

Well, 4 of the 12 finalists are from TX. This includes Keller, who only us folks from Texas were aware of how good they are. They join Hebron, The Woodlands and Round Rock in the finals. I think it will be between Broken Arrow and Hebron for the trophy. Good luck to all Southwestern Region Bands.

Yes, Texas has quality bands. No doubt about it. They do well wherever they go--be it Atlanta, St. Louis, or Grand Nationals.

Hebron has always stood out to me and I'm glad to see they are at the top of their game. (When I saw them a few years ago with my brother in San Antonio, they were amazing, but not quite "there," yet. It looks as if they've arrived.)

Congrats to Broken Arrow--a band that is the epitome of quality, no matter where they place.
