I think it's pretty safe to say Ayala, Vista Murrieta, and Upland will be in the top 3, and I think it will be that order. It will be REAL interesting to see who else rounds out the top 5, particularly with the notable absence of Cedar Ridge, Saratoga, Clovis West, and Nogales. I think there is a lot of potential for upsets for what will be the bottom tier finalists (bottom 5). Arroyo, Newberry Park, Montwood, Colony, Trabuco Hills, El Dorado, and Corona Del Sol are bands that come to mind that might hit the 10th spot, if not a little higher. None are quite distinguished, yet, however. I'm going to go on a limb and say Colony turns some heads. (They have some Ayala blood in their organization.) And it'll be interesting to see how Arroyo fares this year. (They were close last year, and seems to be on the up-and-up.)

Alan
I was able to see both Colony and Arroyo early in the season at the past few field tournaments. Colony is looking very solid this year and is performing a Winter themed show. I believe they have new uniforms which look really neat. They produced a well balanced Sound and the percussion is evidently improving thanks to the help of the ayala instruction.

I was able to see Arroyo at the Rowland FT and I must say that this is their strongest season yet. Marching a large sized 5A band and about a 45 member guard, they definetly turned heads. Their show was a Tribal Aztec themed which I believe Vista Murrieta played the same music in 2013. Lots of visuals and really good sound for a first show.

I haven't had the chance to see Great Oak but usually they are always strong. But you are right, you should not count these bands out of making a finals appearance.
To those of you attending the show, let me know how everyone does, and enjoy.

Thank you for the great feedback and information! I also don't think Colony would be participating if their director didn't think they were ready for the BOA spotlight, so we'll see! On Arroyo, I agree. That band has been through a lot through the years: a bass drummer who collapsed on the competition field and died (that I was there to witness, believe it or not), and a trailer accident on the way to a competition that destroyed their instruments. I hope both these bands have a GREAT show and give the rest of the bands a run for their money.

Wow, a lot of bands have dropped out! Sad. Well, in defense of bands dropping out because of the pressure, or perceived pressure, this is STILL an "early season" show for CA bands, but a "late season" show for BOA. The judging in BOA tends to be much, much more critical than SCSBOA or even WBA judging, and are ranking and rating based on a national standard. I predict a lot of Division II and III ratings scores with most of the bands except for the top 3 or 4. I remember this happening a few years back at an early season BOA show (in Long Beach, in fact) where it seemed like everyone was getting pulverized...but the fact was many of the bands had yet to finish their show or had just finished with a rough-around-the-edges product.

BTW, Brian, I'm looking forward to your band's performance. I haven't seen Ramona (Riverside) in a while. I wish your band the best of skill!

Okay, let's have fun. I took the rankings from Kevin (Hostrauser), the Borderlands (El Paso, TX) expert, and myself, and assigned 60 points to 1st place, 30 points to 2nd place, 20 points to 3rd place, 15 points to 4th place, 10 points to 5th place, 5 points to 6th place, 4 points to 7th place, 3 points to 8th place, 2 points to 9th place, and 1 point to 10th place. Obviously, Thousand Oaks had to be taken out of the equation, so they were. If the band was not in the "top 10" prediction whatsoever, they are assigned 0 points.

Here is the rankings:

1) Ayala (180 points - strongly favored to win)
2) Vista Murrieta (80 points)
3) Upland (70 points)
4) El Dorado (30 points)
5) Fountain Valley (24 points)
6) Desert Vista (22 points)
7) Etiwanda (16 points)
8) Foothill (9 points)
9) Montwood (7 points)
10) Los Osos (6 points)

Looks pretty right on through 4th place, I think. Opinions differ more vastly between 5-10th place, obviously. I believe that if any of these bands get knocked out of finals, it would be quite a significant upset.

Bubble bands (bands that could score an upset) include Corona Del Sol, which technically is the best band in Arizona right now if you look at this year's Arizona results (although I still have to favor Desert Vista after last year's showing)...Trabuco Hills, who are a consistently strong band...Colony, with the Ayala factor, probably fighting the "small number of members" SOMETIMES effect downer factor...and Arroyo, who are not to be counted out.

Should be a good fight to the finish!!!

Thanks Alan for the thread...I miss these sort of threads that used to appear here a lot. The BOA forums are okay to cruise but just don't have the local flavor, unless its a post from you and the few who know about California bands.

Thanks! That's very nice of you. I stay mildly involved these days (to support my brother and alma mater, mostly), and love to take a peek at BOA news when I'm able.

BTW, this is interesting to note: I believe the last time BOA held a regional in California at such an early date was 2005. That year it was held one week after what I always consider the official "SoCal Season Kick-off"--the Kennedy Preview of Champions (formerly Magnolia Preview of Champions). This year, once again, the week after the Kennedy Preview of Champions, which, granted, was the third week of October this year instead of the second week. However, I still expect to see unfinished, incomplete shows, and low, low scores. How low? Well, take a look at what happened in 2005...

El Paso to Houston, is not much different than El Paso to Los Angeles in terms of hours/miles.

No Fountain Valley in the Top 10 surprises me quite a bit. But that's the only really big surprise here.

Based on the Finals line-up...

Prelims 6th-10th places, alphabetically: Corona del Sol, Desert Vista, El Dorado, Etiwanda, Los Osos.

Prelims 1st-5th places, alphabetically: Ayala (1st place), Foothill, Trabuco Hills, Upland, Vista Murrieta.

WOW. What a show. That was incredible! The quality of bands has REALLY jumped this year. Shout out to BOA for providing free tickets to my Father and I.

Correction noted on that finals post... BOA's website actually has the following at the end of the results...

Outstanding Music Performance - Ayala H.S., CA
Outstanding Visual Performance - Ayala H.S., CA and Vista Murrieta H.S., CA
Outstanding General Effect - Ayala H.S., CA

And I'm sure this is killing a lot of you and not just myself....

ONE judge ranked Vista Murrieta in 6th place. REALLY? 6th? For all of us who were there and watched the finals, could any one single person claim Vista Murrieta was a 6th place performance? No doubt Upland had an amazing show and a great performance, I really liked them in fact, so I am not at all discounting their 2nd place victory. I am just calling out the obvious here... even if this one judge would have ranked Vista Murrieta in 4th place, they would have still taken 2nd place. But he ranked them in 6th place knocking them down to 3rd and I'm sorry, but that was highway robbery!

Again, I would have never doubted Upland taking 2nd place from watching their amazing performance but common now, with fair scoring across the board. I live in LA county, no where near Vista Murrieta, and even I feel bad for them.

Please be more specific..What caption were they placed 6th?...There are several judges for several captions...Some captions are more subjective than others...so...Also if you are happy with the outcome of the top 3...then why is it "highway robbery".

Congrats to all the bands.... especially Ayala..winning it again.
