I think it is way too early for this discussion.

Still think it is too early to really discuss much, but at this point we can at least figure out if some of the traditionally successful groups will still be in 1A or have changed division.

Groups from 1A champs last year:

Saddleback: Saw a video from a football game, think it is them, think they are in 2A now.
LA: Dunno...heard they have a new director though?
Marshall: Dunno
Lancaster: 1A again (cause I teach here)
Highland: 1A though bigger (saw them at a local event in our district)
JFK: Heard from one of my alum whose working with them they are 2A
Charter Oak: No idea
Oxnard: 1A...on the schedule for Warren this weekend
Palos Verdes: 1A, competed at South Bay
Steele Canyon: No idea.
Don Lugo: listed for some SCJA stuff, not sure how those equate to scsboa though
Tustin: No idea

Santa Margarita: 1A, listed to compete this weekend
Gabrielino usually does pretty well in 1A as well. Pictures on their Facebook look like 1A, just a pretty full one.

I'm sure we'll have a lot better idea who is what size by the time lineups for next weekend go up but hey what else is there to do to try to keep some sanity instead of freaking out over all the stuff I need to be fixing in my show?

Don Lugo has a new director. They are now doing all WBA as far as I know.

Both Charter Oak and Tustin will be in the 1a division according to the Valencia Field Tournament line up.

Saugus has the full lineup for Royal on their itinerary for the show on their website.... so more 1A's that didn't compete this weekend:

Polytechnic
Rio Mesa
Hueneme
Taft Charter
Nordhoff
El Camino
Cabrillo

Grid is up...though sparse at the moment...guessing at least a few need to get their paperwork in still.

Additions: Looks like Marshall is still 1A this year.

Well third week of competition and half of the bands that made Champs last year, and are still in the 1a division have performed. Looks like LA is off to a rocky start, I don't think I've ever seen them score so low, and most of the others: Oxnard, Palos, Charter Oak and Tustin seem to be in a similar scoring area, mid 50s. Seems like El Camino is having a good year, have the highest score currently, and could make champs this year. Will be more interesting once Lancaster, Highland, and Marshall get their first score to see where they will place in that especially considering their the only ones from the top 6 that haven't competed yet.

You forgot Saddleback....they won the division last year and are in 1A again (just added to the grid today i think). Guess they lost a few kids since the video I saw or I counted wrong. They have yet to compete as well.

Whittier is probably another to watch as well. They did pretty well on the first score and it was pretty early...plus they are a fairly big 1A it looks with a huge color guard.

Should also mention it looks like Gabrielino is going to do SCJA comps this year instead of SCSBOA.

Well seems like Lancaster wants to be the band to beat this year, almost 6 more points than the next highest 1a band.

Lancaster and Highland both did well, but Rampage will be very telling...most of the groups that have the highest scores in 1A at the moment will be there competing head to head. And of course Saddleback and Marshall haven't come out to play yet (are they out this weekend?) and both took medals last year.

Scores from different shows are meaningless in SCSBOA... but the fact that they are at the top of their various shows (provided there was some competition) is a better indicator....

There's so little data to go on it's tough to make a declaration this early in the season. But my current, show-adjusted 1A rankings show...

65.60 El Camino Real
65.25 Whittier
64.70 Tustin
64.50 Lancaster
63.45 Marshall

Subject to change (greatly) as more show results come in. But that's through 10/17.
