BOA Long Beach Notables

Post by airons0678 » Mon Oct 19, 2015 10:15 am

Some bands that immediately stand out to me at this show (my opinion), denoted by asterisks:

8:15 a.m. - Arroyo H.S., CA
* 8:30 a.m. - Thousand Oaks H.S., CA
8:45 a.m. - Great Oak H.S., CA
* 9:00 a.m. - Los Osos H.S., CA
* 9:15 a.m. - Etiwanda H.S., CA

Break

10:00 a.m. - Newberry Park H.S., CA
* 10:15 a.m. - Fountain Valley H.S., CA
10:30 a.m. - Imperial H.S., CA
10:45 a.m. - Montwood H.S., TX
11:00 a.m. - Colony H.S., CA
11:15 a.m. - Trabuco Hills H.S., CA
* 11:30 a.m. - Vista Murrieta H.S., CA
11:45 a.m. - Ramona H.S., CA

Lunch

* 12:45 p.m. - Foothill H.S., NV
1:00 p.m. - South Pasadena H.S., CA
1:15 p.m. - Covina H.S., CA
*1:30 p.m. - Desert Vista H.S., AZ
1:45 p.m. - El Dorado H.S., TX
2:00 p.m. - Corona Del Sol H.S. AZ
* 2:15 p.m. - Upland H.S., CA
* 2:30 p.m. - Ayala H.S., CA

I think it's pretty safe to say Ayala, Vista Murrieta, and Upland will be in the top 3, and I think it will be that order. It will be REAL interesting to see who else rounds out the top 5, particularly with the notable absence of Cedar Ridge, Saratoga, Clovis West, and Nogales. I think there is a lot of potential for upsets for what will be the bottom tier finalists (bottom 5). Arroyo, Newberry Park, Montwood, Colony, Trabuco Hills, El Dorado, and Corona Del Sol are bands that come to mind that might hit the 10th spot, if not a little higher. None are quite distinguished, yet, however. I'm going to go on a limb and say Colony turns some heads. (They have some Ayala blood in their organization.) And it'll be interesting to see how Arroyo fares this year. (They were close last year, and seems to be on the up-and-up.)

Here's how I see Prelims playing out, along with some commentary and my predicted score...

1. Ayala H.S., CA (84.85)
Really the class of this show, I don't see them being seriously threatened. I suppose you could count Vista Murrieta and Upland as dark, DARK horses to win, but...

2. Vista Murrieta H.S., CA (79.50)
3. Upland H.S., CA (78.95)

...I think they're more likely to battle it out for 2nd. I have Vista Murrieta on top, but a flip-flop here wouldn't surprise me.

4. Fountain Valley H.S., CA (76.15)
5. Desert Vista H.S., AZ (76.00)
6. Trabuco Hills H.S., CA (75.20)
7. Foothill H.S., NV (75.05)
8. Thousand Oaks H.S., CA (74.65)

The first big cluster should be in 4th-8th places. I expect Fountain Valley to be Top 5, and am predicting resurgences from Desert Vista and Trabuco Hills. But these bands should be pretty close to one another and could finish in any of these five positions.

9. Montwood H.S., TX (73.45)
10. Etiwanda H.S., CA (73.30)
11. Los Osos H.S., CA (73.20)
12. El Dorado H.S., TX (73.15)
13. Corona del Sol H.S., AZ (72.55)

The next big cluster will be here, the fight for Finals. Two will make it, three won't, and it could be very close. I would be surprised if at least ONE of the Texas bands didn't make it in, but no one in this group is a gimme for the Top 10.

14. Great Oak H.S., CA (71.75)
15. Colony H.S., CA (71.65)
16. Arroyo H.S., CA (71.50)

If you want dark horses for Finals, here they are. All three bands are making strides and should impress... I'm just not sure they can power past the groups ahead of them. But I can't count them completely out of the running. As Lloyd Christmas said, "So you're telling me there's a chance?"

17. Ramona H.S., CA (65.50)
18. Covina H.S., CA (61.25)
19. South Pasadena H.S., CA (61.15)
20. Newbury Park H.S., CA (59.85)
21. Imperial H.S., CA (57.10)

Barring a sudden and surprising increase in performance level, I don't think we'll be seeing any members of this group in the evening show.

Hello there!

Interesting Predictions you got there. Not sure if you been following those 2 Texas bands competing there or not but I am really familiar with both since I am from El Paso, TX myself and am one of the staff members at Borderland Marching. I will say that this year El Dorado is one of the better bands in our area, they are much more stronger visually and musically this year compared to many in our area. I think they will definitely be the highest ranked band out of the both.

My Top 10.

1- Ayala High School
2- Upland High School
3- Vista Murrieta High School
4- El Dorado High School
5- Desert Vista High School
6- Fountain Valley High School
7- Etiwanda High School
8- Thousand Oaks High School
9- Montwood High School
10- Foothill High School

I would Agree, El Dorado is better than Montwood, and might finish in the Top 7.

Bryan, we should stop here on our way back from Mt. Carmel to check out finals. Looks like a great event.

After hearing so many positive comments about Texas bands in the recent past, I would be surprised if the bands from Texas did not make finals.
Why would you spend all the money to get to LA if you don't think you have a great shot at finals? Unless Disneyland has the big draw...

Well, El Paso bands are not exactly the cream of the crop UIL-wise or BOA-wise. El Dorado, from the looks of it, looks solid. From what I understand, El Dorado is significantly better than Montwood. And if you factor in the best band in Nevada, two of the best bands in Arizona, and a whole lot of exceptional California bands, it's not unfathomable that one of these two Texas bands may not make the cut. We've see it time and time again with other bands from far away. I do think Disneyland is a draw, but all in all I think it's about the great experience of competing with, being able to see some of the best bands in the region.

It is closer to LA from El Paso than it is to Houston, TX.
However one big thing is that El Paso Bands also know that they cannot win going east. The Regionals at Austin, Arlington, Houston and San Antonio are loaded with far stronger Bands than CA is.

Funny thing that you mention Disneyland, this is a drawing card for the folks in the El Paso area. Conversely, CA is not a selling point to the schools in Central and Eastern TX. This same weekend that El Dorado and Montwood are going West, Winston Churchill and LD Bell are going to the Super Regional at Atlanta

Was just informed that Thousand Oaks pulled out. I noticed they were set to compete at Hart's tournament the same day (at 8:15pm). I thought to myself, "How're they going to do that?!" Well, now it looks like we have an answer. Warren (4A) will be their only challenge at that show.

Since Thousand Oaks pulled out, my adjusted rankings (predictions) are as follows:

1) Ayala
2) Vista Murrieta
3) Upland
4) El Dorado
5) Etiwanda
6) Los Osos
7) Fountain Valley
8) Foothill
9) Desert Vista
10) Montwood

*Corona Del Sol (bubble), *Trabuco Hills (bubble), *Arroyo (bubble), *Colony (bubble) - in that order.
