Incredibly Cool Piece

Post by JCYS » Tue Mar 18, 2008 7:42 pm

So, wonder what a brass band sounds like?

Wonder what kind of stuff is written for them?

Here is a link to the world famous Black Dyke Mills Band under the baton of Dr. Nicholas Childs (all euphonium players know who he and his brother are), playing a piece by a British composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper, whom also happens to play percussion for the band.

Unfortunately the recording starts a second or two into the piece. There is another recording of Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band on Youtube.

The piece is called, "Where Eagles Sing."

Check out the running euphonium lines in the middle soft section of the piece, they are faint, but incredible.

The "middle soft section" is only about 1:00 into the video, and wow.

Note to all trumpet players: around 3:00 is an instructional video on how your instrument should sound in the high register. Bright, full and not pinched.

WOW!
Being an euphonium player...and hearing that piece...WOW is the only thing I can think of.

Omg that was amazing!
Music is the soul that seeks to fly freely and untamed; oft' it is not disturbed, nor should it be.

Heh, bringing this one back from the depths.

You can get a version of it by the Cory Band from iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/eryri ... =691834941.

While you're at it, get "Enter the Galaxies", and "Walking With Heroes".

Drum corps nuts may recognize the introduction of WWH from Carolina Crown's 2013 show.

There are couple really good new postings to YouTube of the Black Dyke Band.

From the World Band Festival Luzern Brass-Gala, September 20, 2014

A new piece titled Fire in the Blood composed by Paul Lovatt-Cooper

And Highland Cathedral with the conductor wearing a GoPro head camera, so you know what it feels like to be on the podium in front of a great band!

(Keep in mind that at the powerful 4:00 minute mark that there are only 15 horns playing,)

Enjoy!

...and that would be PLC on the bass drum.

Here's a really good audio rendition (put your head down and close your eyes if you don't want to read the associating lyrics, headphones would be a good idea too).
International Staff Band of the Salvation Army

Check out the Finale to Peter Graham's "On the Shoulders of Giants". Not sure if the Cavaliers are pulling from this for the upcoming drum corps season.

The Salvation Army's ISB sets some pretty decent standards for Brass Band performance. 8-)

I commissioned Paul to write a concert opener for my band a couple years ago, and his rates are very reasonable. It was the first piece he'd ever written for wind band.

Paul relinquished his role of being Black Dyke's composer-in-residence. He's focused on writing for TV & film.

Perhaps the next John Williams?

PLC has another one out, and I've only found 2 videos of the same performance, but there is a discrepancy in the title. One is labeled as "Power and the Glory", and the other one is labeled as "Power and the Blood".

A substantial audio recording won't be released until next year (I inquired from his company).
