Is it me, or is Golden Valley's step size extraordinarily big? This seemed to kill them, as they "looked" in a rush to get out of there. In contrast, the sweepstakes winners looked very relaxed, and...more precise? (I'm not used to seeing parade blocks do formation changes in the middle of a review...well, because I'm from southern California.) Not sure about either performance, and I don't think that Irvington necessarily "nailed it." But not bad.

I agree. I noticed the stride issue when I watched the video

Re: VIDEO:38th Annual Lincoln Band Review 11/15/14
Here are my "no one asked you" thoughts. Standard disclaimers apply (I wasn't there, only so much you can glean from video recording, etc.).
MARCHING
I notice the stride issue with Golden Valley, and maybe that was causing some more flat-footed strikes because I also saw an uncharacteristically high number of "plodders" in GV's block this year. The back half of GV's block had a ton of upper body control problems. Irvington's block was not without its flaws (can't say I've ever seen ANY NorCal band--Fairfield, Foothill, Homestead, Irvington--march 200+ and not have the back end of the block be of "hoo boy" quality) but overall I thought they were noticeably better.
EDGE: IRVINGTON (slight)
SHOWMANSHIP
Golden Valley has an extremely large and very excellent guard, and both band and guard performed with much more of a "presence" and attitude on the street. Irvington's guard was... adequate, but not comparable to GV.
EDGE: GOLDEN VALLEY (significant)
MUSIC
Irvington's woodwinds were leagues better than Golden Valley, just no contest IMO. Irvington did have some intonation and blend issues in the brass, but as a whole I thought their ensemble's articulation and sound was superior. Golden Valley's brass was very muddy sounding and had some balance problems. I think there were so many notes for them to hit that their articulation (and, a few times, their phrasing) suffered as a result. Don't get me wrong, I love and admire that the staff challenged the kids with a really, really hard march. I just think they bit off more than they could chew with "Mephistopheles". Credit for difficulty only goes so far, and I think Irvington's cleanliness was worth more than GV's attempted difficulty. Besides, it's not like "Glorious Victory" is as phone-it-in as "Slavic Farewell" in terms of difficulty.
EDGE: IRVINGTON (moderate)
OVERALL: IRVINGTON (slight)
