Congrats Diamond Bar on parade sweeps, much deserved!
Congrats RB for taking a risk on field - it finally paid off. A much different show than four nights ago. Championships will be interesting next week.
Not surprised by the results.
Awesome night. Kudos to everyone!

Re: Arcadia festival of bands predictions?
What an amazing parade and field tournament this year...it was awesome to see it all come together, students, parents and community. Thank you Arcadia!
EVERYONE should be proud of their performances!
I'll preface by saying I am a spectator, marched in high school and have been following the scene since.
On the street, Diamond Bar was just AWESOME. Powerful but clean, solid marching, amazing guard - they had the whole package! Congrats to the Thundering Herd - you guys rocked!! Was this their first time ever winning sweepstakes at AFOB?
Mt. Carmel was another band I thought had a lot of gusto and really brought their a-game. Not sure if I dig the redness of it all but their performance was strong.
Chino was also fantastic - I think they were my favorite after Diamond Bar. Really awesome performance and good visual look. They should be very proud!
RB and RK were disappointing in my personal opinion. RB because I love March of the Women Marines and while yes there was no arguing it was musically rich and their parade block was in solid formation, it felt underpowered to me and I can't get over the 7 across - they marched half of what Diamond Bar, RK, Chino, Mt Carmel. Yes, totally director's discretion but I feel the marching band Gods rumbling with a "whaaat?"
RK while very put together and an excellent guard, marching and musicianship, just felt like they fell short of the goose bump factor for me.
I also really liked Kaiser and Garey! Great performances with a lot of pride.
On the field, Mt Carmel was a stunner. Their show was awesome and I was (as well as many members of the audience) perplexed that they didn't outscore RB. RB's show while aggressive in the beginning I found to be very morbid and depressing. We cheer the students and parents that make it all happen, but I don't like the concept.
El Dorado - the lights were awesome. Chino, also amazing good show.
Again, my opinions, feel free to disagree
Overall, great show, great time, great memories!

I too was among the surprised when Mt. Carmel did not have the highest score.

Re: Arcadia festival of bands predictions?
Well, it was a really nice Arcadia to watch there was a lot of power behind the bands and a lot of good sounds made.
First Congratulations to Diamond Bar, well deserved for the amount of work they put into it.
However, even though I'm sure it's not much of my place to question any of the judges scores made. I however do have an interjection to make. I know judging bands is really a hard task at hand, especially when you judge the last four bands. And they all are very clean so it's comes down to who saw what and no one chokes.
Diamond Bar, having a phenomenal season, that was well earned. But... that's all they do. They don't do field so really it should be expected that they take sweepstakes. They probably have other activities outside of band, but they don't have weight of a field show that other schools have such as RB, Carmel, and RK have. Having 7-8 more minutes of music to memorize, and visuals, and drill. Plus I heard Diamond Bar had a great field band back in the day and it would be really cool to see that again.
Next, I made an assumption that the band review would turn out a certain way and minus the scores, it turned out how I expected it to for the most part. And today, like a lot of people, I sat down and watch the bands on YouTube. Thank God for Music 213 . But, I watched RK, Diamond Bar, RB and Mt. Carmel 6 times. Judging first marching, music twice, showmanship, aux., and then drum major. Using the guidelines that SCSBOA judges are given. And it came out a little differently then what happened yesterday. Also, take fact in that I could really not see what the marching judge saw because we only see them from one view point on the camera.
So the scores are significantly lower...
Band
Mt. Carmel - 94.30 Sweepstakes
Marching - 185
Music - 478
Showmanship - 280
Aux. - I forgot...
Drum Major - 93.7 (In relation to the other mace DM's 2nd place to Diamond Ranch who I thought got first)
Riverside King - 94.10 1st Place
Marching - 181
Music - 483
Showmanship - 277
Aux. - 88.50 (2nd)
Drum Major - 93.3 (2ND)
Diamond Bar - 94.05 2nd Place
Marching - 181
Music - 478.5
Showmanship - 281
Aux. - 91.50 (Sweeps)
Drum Major - 91.3 (3rd)
Rancho Bernardo 93.7 3rd Place
Marching - 178
Music - 485
Showmanship - 274
Aux. - 83.80 (No Clue for the place I would put, I didn't watch every one)
Drum Major - 77.0 (5pt Penalty)
Also the other top auxiliary units, and drum majors that placed high and were not the top 4 bands
Aux.
Glendora - 88.7 (1st)
Drum Major
Olympian - 93.6 (1st Mil. DM)
Also I'm so happy to see that Arlington made it up in the ranks close the top 6 or 7 bands. Congratulations!!!
So this is just what I thought. O'well til next years I guess. Congratulations to all bands yesterday. And good luck to those who are doing the SCSBOA Champoinships.

What you have to remember is that you got to watch and re-watch the videos 6 times. Judges don't have that luxury. They are making split second decisions.

Each time I judged something else, each judge judges something different and I watched music twice because I was typing my thoughts on an iPhone. So yeah....12drummersdrumming wrote:What you have to remember is that you got to watch and re-watch the videos 6 times. Judges don't have that luxury. They are making split second decisions.

Re: Arcadia festival of bands predictions?
Not to mention watching/listening to a video is completely different from seeing/hearing a band live. The scores are different because of this difference and because a judging panel gives 6 different evaluations of 3 different categories.

Re: Arcadia festival of bands predictions?
When I asked last year I was told the only thing that matters is the "grid." Last year no recaps were posted after the grid was complete, so I'm not counting on it for this year either...uci_guy wrote:Anyone know if/when recaps will be posted?
