Class AAAA
Outstanding Music - Ayala H.S., CA
Outstanding Visual - Ayala H.S., CA

Class AA
3rd - South Pasadena H.S., CA
2nd - Onate H.S, NM
1st - Saratoga H.S., CA

Class AAA
3rd - Los Altos H.S., CA (not the one from Hacienda Heights)
2nd - Clovis West H.S., CA
1st - Nogales H.S., CA

Class AAAA
3rd - Upland H.S., CA
2nd - Cedar Ridge H.S., TX
1st - Ayala H.S., CA

Finalist Bands (in random order)
Clovis West H.S., CA
Vista Murrieta H.S., CA
Fountain Valley H.S., CA
Cedar Ridge H.S., TX
Desert Vista H.S., AZ
Foothill H.S., NV
Saratoga H.S., CA
Upland H.S., CA
Ayala H.S., CA
Nogales H.S., CA

Analysis: Big upset of the day was Homestead, but...not really. They performed poorly, I felt. I predicted 9 out of the 10 bands that would make finals. I thought Onate would make finals, but they didn't. (Foothill did, instead, which...I kind of sort of understand.) Good job, Nogales, not only upsetting Clovis West in AAA, but making finals amongst a LOT of great bands. It should be awesome tonight.

John Lack left Clovis West for Evergreen H.S. up in Vancouver, WA. Clovis West is still very good, but the drop off has been noticeable.

Actually, Kevin, that's incorrect. He is still there (as of now). He's listed in the program and a band director friend of mine told me the deal fell through for Evergreen. Clovis West is still very good (snagging a caption), but there were a few flaws I noticed, including the cutting out of the wireless mic at times. We'll see how they do tonight!

I, too, wasn't aware that John Lack returned to Clovis West (having seen on Facebook that he was going to Evergreen).

I watched Homestead's rehearsal for a little bit last Wednesday evening and was a little surprised they didn't make the cut. Looking at the prelims schedule, the only band to make Finals from that first block was the last band - Cedar Ridge.

I haven't dug into the score archives, but is it typical for many of the bands that go on that early to not make Finals?

I found out about John Lack from a friend of mine who is a band director a while back. I didn't want to write anything about it because I wanted to be respectful. (I don't know what happened, but I hope for the best for him.)

I saw Homestead on Youtube and Homestead in prelims and I was immediately not impressed. I don't know who their visual guy (or gal) is, but their cute experiment did not work. I can say the same about their music effect. I'll get more into that with my review. (And I hope the band director(s) attended the BOA clinic on Sunday to get more feedback, because they need it!)

I've seen lots of bands make finals from the first few blocks of the day. LD Bell went on first out of 32 bands in prelims once, and went on to win finals. Performance order doesn't matter. Quality matters. I can safely say the judges were "right" for all the bands that did not make finals in the first part of the day. (The only questionable band was Oñate, whom I felt should have made finals...but after seeing Foothill and Desert Vista again, my feelings changed somewhat.)

I didn't see prelims so I am only going off of finals. Foothill was big but the show was uninspired. Clovis West show just seemed to be missing something and really just too much singing for my taste. I really thought Upland would have placed third.

I think Wildabeast's idea was not that the judges are going to be more harsh in the morning, but rather that bands who perform earlier in the day are going to have more trouble putting on a clean show. That's particularly so if they spent Friday on a bus and then got kicked out of their hotel beds at 5am. It might be a nice gesture to bias the schedule so that bands that had to travel can perform a little later in the day.

That said, I can't imagine how the difference could be more than 1 or 2 points. So we're talking about who slips in at 9th or 10th, not a band that otherwise have placed 3rd or 4th failing to make the cut.

BOA is fair in that if you paperwork early, you get a better performance spot. If you turn it in, say, a month before the contest begins, expect to go on early. It doesn't matter where you're from. I actually think it's harder for a band to go on at 12 noon than it is for a band to go on at 8am, because by that time it is hot and sunny.

In 1993, Valley View performed at, I believe, 7:30am, in a line-up of 32 bands at the BOA Western Regional at CSUF. They made finals and placed 10th in finals. You don't have to have a great slot to make the cut. You have to have a great performance.

Thanks, I was not aware of that. That's completely fair.

I second what Alan said. "Name" recognition is meaningless in BOA. You get what you deserve, regardless of when you perform.

Just in 2014...

9/20 - BOA Louisville, KY: Fifteen bands performed, three of the Top 5 in prelims were in the first five slots. Franklin (TN) performed 1st and placed 4th, Lockport (IL) performed 4th and placed 5th, and Center Grove (IN) performed 5th and placed 1st.

10/11 - BOA Jacksonville, AL: Sixteen bands performed, 1st place band Harrison (GA) performed 2nd. Also, 5th place Lassiter (GA), 8th place McEachern (GA), and 2nd place Kennesaw Mountain (GA) performed 4th, 5th, and 6th in prelims.

10/17 & 10/18 - BOA St. Louis, MO: 2nd place band Blue Springs (MO) performed 9th on the FIRST DAY of the two-day prelims (64 bands total!)
