I WAS at the 50th reunion, and having Marino lead us again was indeed so surreal.

I don't know of the incidents in the mid 2000s, but it seemed that 77 was the real last glory year of the band... We dominated everything for nearly a decade. Even took down the Texas bands at La Mesa. Such great memories

It was not Bill S's doing, the whole district tanked. Something happened that caused the district to cut back their support and dedication to the music programs overall.

I'm sorry if my comment was taken as my blaming Bill. My "no offense to Bill" was an attempt at NOT blaming him but seemed to have fallen short.
... and thank you Dave for the explanation. Many schools and districts had the same issues including ours out here.

That a shame..... Cuz when i was going there, the band, choir, drama, all the fine arts programs are what kept us off the streets and kept us focused on a common goal....i wish educators realized this

I have two questions:

1. Is this the first year and event that a SoCal review is having a percussion competition?
2. What is the criteria, standing in place, constant forward movement, etc???
In answer to 1. above, the percussion competition has been a part of the Arcadia activities for many years. When we were first planning the Chino Invitational Band Review back in 1970, Ken Novak, the band director, expressed a desire to provide a similar competition for the other sections of the band. Like the percussion competition at Arcadia, our competition would take place on the football field prior to the start of awards to provide entertainment and rivalry while awaiting the results of the main competition. We held the Brass Fanfare Competition for several years to great acclaim until the number of cancellations forced us to reconsider and eventually cancel that competition. The reasons for the cancellations were related to the extra time involved in choosing/composing the music and the additional rehearsal time, particularly in light of the newly passed Proposition 13 (1978) which changed the game for many groups and events. We have tried to bring the Brass Fanfare Competition back several times over the years, but the time investment involved by the competitors seems to make it prohibitive. We had also planned to introduce a Woodwind Choir Competition, but it never materialized.

So, in answer to the question was 2012 the first year a SoCal event included percussion competition, the answer is no. Arcadia has had this competition at least since 1970. Of course, at that time they did not have a Field Show Competition and they were called the West Arcadia Band Review.

I'm sure this information will all be included in "THE BOOK."

Remind me why we are discussing the 2012 Arcadia Festival of Bands....

These types of discussions remind me of how much of SoCal's rich marching band history has been forgotten or lost. It also reminds me how laughable the phrase, "It's always been that way..." truly is. For some reason, it is human nature to assume that history only extends back as far as memory. "The Book" would help to restore, or at least remind" our community of that rich history. It could even spur "innovative" changes or additions based on some of those ideas from the past.

Three of our AUHSD parade bands are in the top 11 at Arcadia last year. Savanna recently won a SCSBOA field championship and Western has won medals as well. The programs are all pretty strong and healthy. I'd also invite you out to our District Festival in March if you'd like to see how our kids play. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

As an employee of the AUHSD I feel lots of support. We have wonderful events all year around including a very strong District Honor Band in February and Jazz Showcase in May. As any District, funds around here aren't as strong as they once were across the board…but Music and the Arts still feel the love.

Remember, I was commenting on my perceptions about what was happening 10 to 15 years ago. I have noticed a resurgence in the AUHSD the last several years. That is a very good thing.
