Hm. :|

Congrats to Riverside King! Any of the top four bands could have taken it, I thought. It was a solid competition. But... the judges and I have some significant differences of opinion in other regards.

I'll post my thoughts/review tomorrow or Monday.

I couldn't be there today, but my wife indicated that each group brought their 'A' game to the street and field. It appears that the scores reflect that the judges were challenged throughout each division.

Thanks for posting the street results, Dennis (no doubt between bites of his dinner).

Look forward to your thoughts, Kevin.

West Arcadia/AFOB is now 60 years old. While I wasn't around for the first street battle, I participated in a half-dozen West Arcadia events between junior high and high school. Around the time of my last performance, a number of high quality groups were walking away from the street in order to spend 100% of their energy on field tournaments. At that time, some people were openly predicting the near-term demise of high school instrumental street competitions (Arcadia, Chino, Loara, etc.) and perhaps the eventual narrowing of the scope of field competitions.

After 30 years and through several devastating economic periods, I'm just glad instrumental student musicians continue to have events that showcase their talents. Hopefully for decades to come.

Here's a recap complete with ordinal rankings from Saturday's results:

After last year's incredibly stacked competition I didn't think this year's could top that. I was wrong. What an amazing showing from all the bands that performed Saturday. Each of the young men and women that marched Saturday, along with their directors and instructors deserve to congratulated for the stunning performances they put on!

Special recognition to Golden Valley, braved the unknown in making their trek down. I sincerely hope your finish will not discourage you from coming back again because your performance brought such fresh, raw that was such a pleasure to watch!

And what could've been a more fitting way to celebrate this revered event's 60th Anniversary than to welcome back Rowland High School to Baldwin Ave. for the first time in a decade and a half? Considering that this was the first band review Rowland has done in nearly a decade, I thought they performed superbly. Here's hoping that Rowland will be a regular sight on Arcadia's streets moving forward!

And finally, congratulations to Riverside King on their SIXTH Sweepstakes win, and for coming out on top of a deep field of some phenomenal bands!

There's bound to be when one judge crams 33 of 41 competing bands into an 11-point range (185-195).

Marching in SCSBOA is still a tick sheet. It is entirely possible for all bands to receive the same score if the judge just happens to see the same number of errors.

And I for one am VERY happy with the "tick" system in a military pass and review process. Good job SCSBOA.

JC, thanks for putting these recaps together. You do great work! I have a question:

When there is a tie score between bands, shouldn't the one with the higher music score get ranked higher? The way I listed each individual video link, I made it so that bands receiving tie scores get ranked based on their music scores. For instance, I had Cypress HS ranked 11th, and Kennedy HS ranked 10th, tie scores but Kennedy HS received the higher music score....meaning if bands ranked 1-10 return next year, according to my calculation, Kennedy HS will be the first band in the AA category.

I also noticed the same thing with Loara/Olympian, Beckman/Montebello, and Westview/Eastlake/Santiago. Just my observations :)

Luis, this is nothing compared to the amount of time you pour into all the incredible work you do!

Regarding your question, Arcadia has a tradition of not breaking ties. The belief and philosophy is that if two schools receive the same score total, then regardless of how the total score was arrived at, both schools have equally earned and are deserving of the same placement.

Thank you again for all you do for this activity my friend!

I believe Luis's question was about performance order for next years' AFOB.
