1A could be a bloodbath with a lot of contenders for gold, but I think Los Angeles will pull it out.

Hart is going to be awfully tough to catch in 4A, but you can't count out South Hills (IMO) and Mira Costa has had a fantastic season.

For 1A, I have a feeling Los Angeles will win. I don't know why. I saw San Marcos (Santa Barbara area) on Youtube, and though I liked what I saw I don't know if they'll have the "gusto" L.A. will certainly have.

As for 4A, yeah, I saw Helix, Valencia, Mira Costa, and South Hills at Savanna, and I was IMPRESSED. In fact, I felt the 4A bands overshadowed most of the 5A and 6A bands. I thought South Hills was going to take 1st, but Mira Costa and Valencia pulled ahead. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if things were changed up a bit at Championships, being that one or two of the judges might be from out-of-state (i.e. "fresh pairs of eyes.") I agree, though. Hart will be tough to take down, especially after the season they've had (1st place at MBOS Championships over Vista Murrieta and El Diamante???). 1A/4A should be one of the more exciting SCSBOA Championships shows to watch.

South Hills suffered a pretty bad tear during the drum feature at Savannah, and I'm thinking the judges heard it. I'm really excited to see the top 5 for 4A this year, there is a lot of great competition. Mira Costa is really stepping up its game!! Valencia is great as always and of course the front runner Hart will be who everyone's after. Fantastic stuff!! :P

I'm a huge fan of Hart, but I feel like their placement at mbos championships might not be indicative of their level this year. I was there and I think VM and chino hills (and El Diamante) were a notch above Hart. Their prelims placement is a better indicator of their level this year IMO. I'm not super familiar with the 4a bands though, so Idk how they'd stack up

I had South Hills in 1st place, personally, but I think you're right--there were a few tears. I'm pretty impressed they don't use a DM. Looks like they were relying on the drumline and some of the tempos they had down internally (including the accelerando)? I enjoyed Valencia and Mira Costa, too. I was a little saddened to see Los Altos, because while they are a decent band they're nowhere near what they used to be in the 80's and 90's--one of the most feared bands in Open Class ("6A"). Sounds like they use the same drum cadence to enter the field, though. :)

Having seen both groups live, I think San Marcos' show has more scoring potential. LA will medal, but I don't think their show has enough to win. And I didn't get to see Charter Oaks, but they always make a push so don't count them out.

I have only seen Charter Oak this year from the top 4 1A bands. They are certainly better than the rest of 1A. I would not be surprised if they made it all the way to the top of 1A.

I am definitely rooting for my alma mater South Hills, but the competition is tough. I'm glad that you guys placed SH 1st! I think it was just a very off performance that night.

Predictions for top 5:
1. Hart
2. South Hills
3. Mira Costa
4. Valencia
5. Granada Hills

Has anybody ever seen Gabrielino from 1a? I've never heard of them. I heard that the schools to beat in 1a were Los Angeles, San Marcos, and Charter Oak but I've never heard or seen Gabrielino's name in championships before.

Gabrielino was in Champs last year in 1A. I don't really remember them prior to that, either at Champs or anywhere else for that matter...but I think they compete primarily in a different region of SoCal than my group does. Perhaps the school is fairly new?

They have a facebook page that has, or at least had at some point, some video on it if you are curious. Search Gabrielino Eagle Regiment and you should find them.

The last 5 bands in 4A were all excellent last night. Hart was awesome musically - I honestly have never heard such a fine musical performance on the field - especially at a 4A level.

Valencia took high auxiliary and high percussion and deserved them both. There was a noticeable lack of showmanship from several of the final groups.

In the end, both Valencia and Hart broke 90 and Hart deserved the gold. Congrats also to Mira Costa with the bronze.

Also - kudos to Aliso Niguel for running a fine show.

Band - Score - Show Order
El Camino - 75.4 (12)
Liberty - 75.6 (10)
Del Norte - 78.0 (11)
Esperanza - 79.7 (9)
JW North - 81.1 (7)
Arroyo - 83.2 (8)
Helix - 84.5 (5)
Granada Hills - 86.6 (3)
South Hills - 87.7 (6)
Mira Costa - 89.6 (2)
Valencia (Placentia) - 90.5 (4) http://youtu.be/jn48feg8dCg
Hart - 92.6 (1) http://youtu.be/70LVrKWnkA4

High Aux - Valencia - 92.5
High Percussion - Valencia - 90.5
