You know, I almost wonder if the results are going to be the exact same as last year in terms of placement for the parade. I think there is also a good chance that the field captions are going to be split between 3-4 groups again.

Here is the line-up for this year's Percussion Festival, which will take place on the track at the High School. In the case of rain, the Festival will be moved indoors to the gym.

11:30 AM Foothills M.S. "A" - Host
11:40 AM Arcadia H.S. "A" Line - Host
11:50 AM Temple City H.S. - Field Division
12:00 PM Beckman H.S. - Street Division
12:10 PM Bonita Vista H.S. - Field Division

BREAK

12:25 PM Arcadia H.S. "Open" Line - Host

The Percussion Festival provides percussion ensembles of the day's competing bands an opportunity to showcase and perform a part of their street cadence or field show repertoire. The performances will be adjudicated, and placements will be awarded to the top three ensembles earning the highest scores in each division. This year's Festival will feature 14 groups, including exhibition performances by all three of Arcadia's percussion ensembles and ensembles from Foothills Middle School.

Latest update from the National Weather Service for zip code 91007 (Arcadia):

34% chance of rain from 4:00 - 9:00 am
80% chance of rain from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
70% chance from 5:00 - 9:00 pm

Low to mid-60s during the day, dropping to mid 50s after dark.

 A day for die-hard spectators.

Percussion Comp?????????????????? I like it.

I have two questions:

1. Is this the first year and event that a SoCal review is having a percussion competition?
2. What is the criteria, standing in place, constant forward movement, etc???

It looks similar to the "concert" percussion competition held at the Vintage Reserve in Napa.

Oh, and watching the USC/UCLA game it is POURING at the Rose Bowl, so I'm assuming it's very wet in Arcadia today, too.

Still sunny and dry down here in San Diego. :P

Arcadia has done this for several years: at least ten ish, possibly more. I'm not sure of the criteria, but when I've observed it (at least in part), it seemed to be standstill. It's kind of odd, given that I'm a percussionist, but I've never really paid much attention to the event. It seems like it's either groups playing their field show (or excerpts) minus the wind parts, or groups playing a super early version of their winter show minus any sort of visual package. It's a kind of cool way to pass time in between the end of the review comp & and the start of awards, but when I've gone to Arcadia for the band review I've typically spent that time in hospitality eating lunch & watching football (I went to the Ohio State University, and traditionally Arcadia day used to be the day of The Game: OSU vs Michigan so my focus after my group had finished street and before awards was on The Game  ). The percussion thing always seemed like an intriguing idea, but when I've been up at Arcadia previously my attention after my group's performance was on tOSU football; maybe one of these years I'll check it out (now that tOSU vs Michigan game is the Saturday after Thanksgiving)

Yeah was nice and sunny when I left San Diego this am. It's cool and on and off again drizzle up here.

Great job to all bands at the band review. Here's RB's performance captured on my phone:

Ran into the man, Luis. I'm sure he'll have his awesome vids up soon.

Looking forward to a fun, chilly night at Citrus College.

Good seeing you today, Jay. I was going to attend the field show but won't be after all. Stay dry :)

Here's Arcadia's performance of Washington Grays. I'll post it again on the results thread Dennis posted, along with the other band links.

Congratulations to all involved in today's AFOB. To those working the event from Arcadia/Dana/First Ave/Foothills, great job in difficult conditions. To the participants, great work and great focus despite the water blowing in your face. This was particularly true of Arcadia's field show performance, the start of which was delayed for several minutes while the crew worked on a technical issue. While already at attention and in the worst rain of the night, the student-musician's lack of movement reflected a great deal of self-discipline. Very nicely done.

I only saw the last four competitive performances (Chino, El Dorado, Mt. Carmel, and Rancho Bernardo). Given the conditions, I thought the performances were strong. I was particularly impressed by RB's full, well supported sound and solid intonation. Having seen the ED show before, i was impressed by the cleaning since Chino. To me, it looks like the most difficult drill (of the 6A bands I've seen) and it sounds like the most complex music. A strong performance.

And to the spectators, great job for supporting these student musicians.

We need to do something about the rain. I smell a conspiracy by the uniform and instrument makers. Be sure to dry your horn tonight.

Scores anyone? Was there for all of 6A but left after Arcadia. Wasn't prepared for the rain unfortunately.

Yes we were. But ... something happened in the mid 2000's (no offense to Bill S) but Loara tanked then and has never recovered.
Hope you (Loara76) were at the Loara 50th Anniv concert where Marino conducted this past year. It was epic.
(oh ... and I was in Loara band 1972/73 ... came over from Ball Jr. High and graduated '75 ... and my sister was in band in 1975/76 and graduated '78. My brother was class of '79 but was not in band.)
