I'm not so sure about Alhambra and Mount Miguel, but hasn't Arcadia appeared in the Rose Parade 15 times? They also marched in 2008. 2012 marked their 15th appearance. And for Glendora, they marched in the 2010 Rose Parade so 2014 would mark their 9th appearance.dr wrote:Arcadia HS has marched in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade a total of 14 times (1956, 1963, 1966, 1975, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1989, 1993, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2012). Following far behind is Glendora HS (8 times, including 2014), Alhambra HS (7 times), and Mount Miguel HS (7 times).

Re: 59th Annual Arcadia Festival of Bands - Nov. 17, 2012
I can vouch almost 100% for the Mt. Miguel number, as my wife marched in the last of those 7 Rose Parade appearances (1991).
Hasn't Fairfield H.S. from up north been in the parade six or seven times? Seemed like they were going every other year in the 80s and 90s.

Mt. Miguel must be at least 8 times then, because the years I have are 1966, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979 -- so 1991 makes 8.Hostrauser wrote:I can vouch almost 100% for the Mt. Miguel number, as my wife marched in the last of those 7 Rose Parade appearances (1991).

The list I received from the Tournament of Roses Music Committee has been far from accurate. For one thing it starts at 1970, but I have another list of just California bands that goes back to 1950.
Fairfield HS appears thrice - 1980, 1994, 2000

I didn't have 2008 on my list but it would have been added by me manually since the list goes only from 1970-2007. Dates after 2007 I added myself. I missed 2008, so that does make 15.Luis wrote:I'm not so sure about Alhambra and Mount Miguel, but hasn't Arcadia appeared in the Rose Parade 15 times? I did not have Glendora marked in the 2010 Rose Parade, so 9 it is. If only we had a central place to keep all those records. Oh, yeah, for now I guess that's me. I can only imagine how many MORE errors or omissions are on these two lists!!

Re: 59th Annual Arcadia Festival of Bands - Nov. 17, 2012
The story as it's been told to me is that Mt. Miguel was an "alternate" that year. Originally a military band (Army, I believe) was supposed to be in the parade. However, in October 1990 the Gulf War broke out. In November the military band withdrew, and the Rose Parade was left scrambling to find an alternate with very little time.dr wrote:Mt. I don't know if the alternate candidates were already "on-file" with the committee well in advance, or if they were desperate for a local band because they had to "cold-call" on a short turnaround time. In any event, Mt. Miguel got the spot.

My count from a list shows that the Bonham Brothers Boys Band appeared in the Rose 10 times from 1950 to 1959. They may have also been in the parade before 1950, but I can't find any records showing a list of bands prior to 1950.
Bonham Brothers Mortuary sponsored the band and it won the Mayors Trophy at the Maytime Band Review in 1951 and 1952 as well as the Mayors Trophy at the All Western Band Review in 1941 and 1951.

Wow... look at the size of those glockenspiels (bells). Accordions (right) in the marching band... thank goodness things have changed.

Re: 59th Annual Arcadia Festival of Bands - Nov. 17, 2012
For those who consider West Arcadia/AFOB a de facto southern California band review championship, it is important to realize that prior to about 1980, the Arcadia band review (and the Santa Monica band review) were considered tune-ups for Long Beach, although they were still significant competitions in their own right. And within a period of about five years (somebody confirm the dates please), both Santa Monica and Long Beach were gone. While I'm sure a number of insiders were privy the impending demise of these two competitions, the kids and parents were not.
DR is correct that the band review was initiated by Arcadia business owners. Bringing thousands of high school students was good business and good for the community.
My point is that no matter where you live, don't assume that the local parade, band review, or field show is going to be there next year.
Those events that have been around multiple decades have been lovingly nurtured by a relatively small number of individuals.
Stay involved, so your local event doesn't become another Long Beach, Victorville, Santa Monica, Hawthorne, or Seal Beach.
Whether or not you call Arcadia a "championship", it still isn't a bad place to spend a Saturday in November.

The passage of Proposition 13 in 1978 led to many cancellations of band reviews by civic groups. The loss of the All-Western Band Review was the result of "in house" fighting between the chairman of the event and the officials in charge of the money - The Tidelands Commission of Long Beach.

Grasshoppers, the lesson here is NEVER threaten/challenge the hand that feeds you. It is just possible that you overestimate your own importance and the importance of what you produce to that hand that is feeding you.In this case I understand the reaction/decision was swift and final and we all paid the price.vore wrote:The loss of the All-Western Band Review was the result of "in house" fighting between the chairman of the event and the officials in charge of the money - The Tidelands Commission of Long Beach.
