BOA Regional Lists Have Been Released

...and it looks like Indianapolis is the big winner for the most insane contest (with San Antonio, of course, nipping on the heels).

BOA-related...

Broken Arrow H.S., OK just finished their auditions for fall of 2012. Here's the breakdown...

88 woodwinds
98 brass
33 percussion (6 snares, 5 basses, 22 front ensemble)
70 guard
4 field conductors

293 total

And those were just the ones that passed audition.

FYI -

Murrieta Mesa HS has decided to wait a year until jumping into BOA! In only our 3rd year on the field, our program is still growing and while we are proud of our accomplishments, this might be a bit much for us! We respect the BOA organization and look forward to future participation and wish our sister school Vista Murrieta, the best of luck!!

Bummer. (I will miss seeing your group there.) I understand the discomfort of competing in such an organization, especially if your group is not used to it or if you think your group "doesn't have what it takes" to compete at a national level. On the other hand, I have seen bands (finalists and non-finalists, mind you) do a complete 180 in program quality after receiving helpful criticism from the BOA judges, and that this oftentimes translates well in other circuits, judging organizations. I would not limit myself based on who is there or how well my group will be perceived.

All that said, whether your group drops out or not, I still see at least NINE groups signed up thus far (for Glendora) that are heavy hitters in the realm of BOA finals. Fountain Valley isn't even on the list, yet, and I suspect they will be added soon, as well as a few other outstanding units. Can't wait!

For any California Band and Color Guard that is even able to field a unit this year and the next will be a miracle. With budget cuts, class size reductions, booster club eliminations, elementary music program cuts, legal issues, salary issues . . . and more, band directors are on the line more then ever.

I hope the spirit of your text was taken out of context.

To all directors that are even able to get a band on the field . . . . you rock!

No, I am quite direct. I don't think there is a reason not to compete at a BOA event. I'm sorry budget cuts, class size reductions, booster club eliminations (and on and on) are problematic. I heard this last year and the year before. (The greatest stinging factor?--that "voluntary contribution" business.) But where there's a will there's a way. I have seen it done.

Band directordom is anxiety filled, no doubt! But there are those out there who would take a job ANYWHERE in this sad economy. My corporation has RIFs left and right (every quarter now, it seems).

Field a band. Take them to a QUALITY competition, even if it's just one show. (You get what you pay for, and trust me, the "budget" shows with much touted "national judges" don't impress me...oh, and the kids?--they're smart, too.)

Do what you would like. Form a street band for all I care. (Diamond Bar did it!)

My point: there is no substitution for quality. I just went to Bristol Farms to buy some salmon that they don't sell at Ralph's, Vons, or Albertson's. I scrounged around for money to pay extra for it because I know it will taste better and will perhaps have greater health benefits. This doesn't mean I don't go to Ralph's, Vons, or Albertson's on occasion...but I know crappy fish when I taste it.

Good day!

Alan,

Thanks for a refreshing "off line" chat . . . The Murrieta Mesa Marching Emerald Regiment will make their BOA debut in Glendora in 2012!

Perhaps we could talk a bit more about a 2013 UT/TX Regional trip resources (e.g., hotels, etc).

And yes, we have figured out a way . . . .

Mark Stone from Ayala H.S. is also a member of this forum, and I'm sure he has a ton of information regarding trip resources and planning for a distance BOA event he could share.

Please feel free to PM me any specific questions...I am happy to help. I would absolutely do the BOA Regional. Expensive; yes, but as Alan says; you get what you pay for!

And don't forget the WBA show at Ayala on 10/20.

Hi Mark et, al!

Thanks everyone . . . been great to get back in to the "flow" of the activity.

On 10/20 I will be over at the SCSBOA @ Murrieta Valley Show supporting my sister school!

Thanks for the invite Mark . . . :)

I am looking forward to our first experiences this year at WBA and BOA.

Only doing the one SCSBOA this year and a few MBOS.

Tom
