This is a UIL AAAAA Championship season this fall. It is probably going to be hard to get a full group of TX Bands due to the UIL Championships in AAAAA coming on 6 Nov. LD Bell may be having to deal with financial constraints. I know that Marcus will probably not come. Glad to see Austin Bowie coming though. They can be a real challenge since they are among the top 5 in AAAAA in TX.

Yeah, so far only Reagan and Bowie have signed up. Could be the smallest Texas contingent at Grand Nationals in many years.

Bell is attending the St. Louis Super Regional this year (along with San Antonio and I assume Denton.) Fees for them this year are running $825.

Bell going to St. Louis will set up a meeting with Broken Arrow at that Regional. Also the reason both Bowie and Reagan can look to Grand Nationals is that UIL is held in their back yards. The alamodome is only about 20 miles from Reagan and 65 miles from Bowie. No overnight costs involved. Bell is located over 250 miles away From San Antonio

West Regional scheduled for Citrus College on October 27. Hope it stays and doesn't get moved like last year's.

I would agree that BOA Grand Nationals will do fine without LD Bell, however I thought a reason should be given for their not going. The fact is that with UIL SMC the day before, the challenges are very difficult. These facts are in play.
1. Next to Grand Nationals, the UIL AAAAA SMC is the most important marching contest in the nation(apologies to those at the Bandmasters Invitational at Memphis University). The pressure and level of competion is very high. Most Bands have overnights stays involved with SMC, thus making one trip and then leaving to go to IN, a dicey situation with school administrators.
2. Due to Rules differences 8 minute shows versus 10 minute shows, the lack of time between events makes this turnaround very difficult.
3. The Late Ross Davis, instilled in me the thought that you can only get a Band "UP" so many times during a season. For us it is a no brainer, SMC is where we would point for.
4. BOA will be fine if no Bands from TX show up. The 2013 season will probably return many to IN, this year the emphasis is on UIL.

No doubt. GN was fine in 2011 without Bell, also.

Missing two seasons in a row, though, makes me wonder if Bell hasn't decided to go the Lassiter route. Lassiter used to be a semi-regular at Grand Nationals. But after Lassiter won GN in 2002 they basically said "Mission Accomplished" and haven't been back to Indy since. Indeed, Lassiter hasn't even attended a BOA Regional since 2008.

Is this just a merging of circumstance, or are we witnessing a shift in focus from Bell?

Is it just my imagination, or does this seem to be primarily an East Coast circuit. Texas and Oklahoma seem to be the western boundary. 8-)

It's just your imagination. It's primarily a midwestern circuit, especially IN, OH, KY and MI. Those are the four prime states and five regionals and the grand nationals are held there. Eastern Time Zone, maybe, but not East/Atlantic coast, specifically. BOA is not very big in the northeast or west of the Rockies, primarily because of the distance from those regions to more than one or two regionals.

In 2012, by time zones...

1 Pacific: 1 regional (CA)
1 Mountain: 1 regional (UT)
5 Central: 3 regionals (AL, TX, TX), 2 super-regionals (MO, TX)
9 Eastern: 6 regionals (KY, MI, MD, OH, OH, PA), 2 super-regionals (GA, IN), National Championships (IN)

But remember geography. Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota (except for the far eastern side) have no band scene. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Nebraska, Kansas, and New Mexico have a very small competitive band scene. Only Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and California have decently developed school marching band programs in the western third of the country. The West Coast is too big and doesn't have enough bands to support more than 2-3 regionals.

Geography plays a Big Part in Regionals. I have been following Wyoming Bands since 2009 when the Casper Troopers and University of Wyoming Bands started their own invitational Marching Competition. This is in addition to the WHSAA State Marching Contest held in Casper. WHSAA records show that there are 81 HS in Wyoming of which only 30 have more than 200 students and only 7 have more than 1000 students.
The First TroopersUWY Invitational drew 9 Bands, only six from Wyoming. Last year 15 Bands were scheduled however due to snow only 12 could make it to Laramie(this was on the 8th of Oct).1st Place went to a Band from CO with 2nd going to one from SD. Best WY Band was 4th.
The WHSAA State Championship drew 15 Bands and is a ratings contest with not only Bands, but percussion, Brass and Woodwinds rated along with DM. This is held the 3rd Saturday in Oct. While Band is not at a level those of us in other states have come to expect, at least with this invitiational starting maybe their will come from WY a top notch Band in the near future. When snow can be on the ground in early Oct, you have to be really dedicated to hit the practice field.Their state football championships are the second week in Nov. This is the way it is in WY and in Montana which has even more difficulties placed before them in trying to field good Bands
