SCSBOA Rankings, Week 5 (10/31/11)

Post by Hostrauser » Mon Oct 31, 2011 11:33 am

This is my attempt to compare and adjust scores from competition to competition to create an overall ranking of the competitive environment. The sports polls for colleges do a Top 25, so that's what I will do, too. The rankings are based solely upon statistical analysis of the judges' scores and not personal opinion.

Could be. San Marcos's rating might be getting hurt by the fact they haven't really faced a lot of high-end 1A competition at their two SCSBOA shows (Rowland and Baldwin Park; only one other 1A Top Ten school was at each show). But even comparing them against the 2A and 3A bands they've competed against, this is where the statistics puts them in 1A.

I really like these lists, and I can tell that a lot of work goes into making them every week. Is it possible, given the complexity of your system, to put a "score" next to each band, just so we can see intervals as well as rankings? It wouldn't matter to me whether it was x/100 or x/48642.678, I'm just wondering how close certain bands are to each other. I feel like it would make the lists seem more credible to people if they could see that, because Band X beat Band Y head to head last week, they're only .1 away from Band Y in the rankings, rather than feeling like you've made a mistake putting Y ahead of X.

Just my two cents. And keep up the good work! I can't imagine how much time this all takes...

It is. I've hesitated adding it in the past because I know I'd get a dozen comments from people who don't realize it's not a straight score comparison, e.g. "Why do you have Bugtussle H.S. listed at 83.1 when we scored 85.6 at our last competition?"

Anyone else have an opinion? Should I list my ranking score instead of just rank order?

South Hills ahead of Hart. I am surprised that any 4A band is ranked ahead of Hart.

I don't expect them to be for long, they received an 85 something at a later competition whereas Hart received an 80 something for their first time out this season. But I'm still rooting for SH! :)

Hart then scored an 89 this last weekend. I'm guessing it's one of those really close margins in the rankings.

But see, I kind of like the mystery/debates like this that start up when I just post ranking order. :hum:
