BOA Regionals update

Post by Wildabeast » Sat Nov 01, 2003 8:59 pm

I'm looking at the BOA website (logged in).

Super Regionals in San Antonio -
Ayala did not make the cut for finals. The top 3 in AAA prelims played out like this: 1. L.D. Bell / 2. Westfield / 3. Ronald Reagan

West Regionals in Phoenix -
Etiwanda swept all captions in prelims for AAA. Top 3 in AAA came out to be: 1. Etiwanda / 2. Coronado / 3. Bel Air.
Mead from WA placed first in AA followed by Onate (NM) & Belleview East (NE). I guess Imperial was the only one in class A.
CA bands that made West Region Finals: El Toro, Etiwanda, Thousand Oaks, and Upland. Imperial is exhibition.

BOA Regional Results.

Post by JLGORMAN » Sat Nov 01, 2003 11:00 pm

It would seem from the results at both San Antonio and Phoenix, the events pretty much followed course, with a couple of exceptions, El Toro finishing Higher than expected, and Westfield beating both L.D. Bell and Reagen. On the whole it speaks highly of the people on the forum that they could be so accurate.

Finals

Post by rickyric » Sun Nov 02, 2003 12:17 pm

Wow! Is the only expression that came to mind at the end of Etiwanda's performance. As I heard from a passenger on my plane back to California that was in attendance "they truly appeared to own the field and were in a separate class by themselves" as spoken from the passenger from north of L.A.
The judges had their work cut out for them with Etiwanda going after Upland in finals and scoring them 6 points or better above with bands still to perform in the finals.

I second that comment about Etiwanda....just a fantastically written and performed program. Kudos to them!
Hey rickyric, were you on the Southwest flight from Phoenix to Ontario at 10:10? I was on the same flight. I was out in Phoenix with El Toro.

No it was in Burbank.

It is nice to see our California Bands go there to show BOA what we have here. All of us were effected by the fire in some way or another and our bands still went there and did very well. ie; El Toro, 1000 Oaks, Upland, Imperial, Covina,Rancho Cucamonga and Etiwanda. Maybe someday BOA will indeed travel out here again for a SUPER Western Regional. Hey BOA I know you check this site out!
:D
I went to see Etiwanda perform at Mesquite High in Gilbert on Friday night at their football game. The home band gave up their show time for Etiwanda and the fans collected money during the game to give to Etiwanda to bring back to California for the local fire victims. That is what band fans are all about and my hats are off to Mesquite High from Gilbert for their generosity.

BOA - San Antonio

Post by Mr. Bill » Sun Nov 02, 2003 3:21 pm

Ayala Update

Just got back from the BOA Super Regional in San Antonio. Left the smoke and haze in So. Cal for the humidity of Texas. Ayala set of to San Antonio with a lot of hope and uncertainty as to how we would compare against the monster Texas bands we have read so much about in the different forums. Playing in the Alamodome was a question, since we never have. Not being able to practice outdoors due to the smoke and ash was also a problem, but you go inside the gym and pretend it's the dome. You deal with the problems and go forward.

We arrived in San Antonio on three different flights, got the kids to settle down some where between 12-3am. Friday morning we practiced at Douglas MacArthur High for the next five hours. The school was great, very helpful, their students were very complimentary, tempatures in the high 80's with humidity the same. Drink plenty of fluids. After practice, traditional power dinner at the hometown buffet, (they are everywhere) then off to the dome to watch a few shows.

The Alamodome is huge, remember this is an indoor football field, much bigger than the University of Dayton Arena or the Nutter Center.

As the band is watching the performances, the roadies are checking out getting on and off the field and can we use our tow vehicles for the pit. (We can as long as we cover the oil pan to keep from dripping on the astroturf)

Saturday morning we are up early because we have secured a couple extra hours of practice time at Winston Churchill High and then off to the dome.

Everything is very structured at a BOA event. We had to unload the busses and instruments at one section of the parking lot and the have to drive the semi to another lot to unload the pit and colorguard props. Special areas and time for warm ups and then off to perform.

As a parent with 19 consecutive trips with the band and colorguard, I have never been this nervous before a competition. So what happened?

Ayala did great, they looked good and sounded good and really thought they had a chance for the finals. Missed it by a hair. Of the 53 bands in the competition Ayala received a 1 rating and a final placement of 16th. The top fourteen go to finals. Several mentioned that if we placed in the top 20 we should be proud and we are!

I think this trip was important for Ayala and the rest of the WBA Bands to see what else is out there and to give it your best shot. Ayala now has only a couple of days to get back and ready of the Mission Viejo Tournament. ( Our truck won't even get back until Tuesday) but I know we will be ready for this weekend as well as Fresno on the 22nd.

my thoughts on San Antonio

Post by split5050 » Sun Nov 02, 2003 5:37 pm

I had the unique ability to see Ayala this year for the first time at San Antonio. I must say in all honesty that they looked nervous. Beautiful show, that could have been a little bit cleaner in parts. The mistake with the placement of the ladders was a little distracting and unfortunate, (the drill was compromised during the ballad as a result) However, considering the lack of ability to practice a week prior to San Antonio, I think they pulled off a great show. Congratualtions for making it in the top 20. It was nice seeing some California faces.

This weekend was the first time I was able to see a Texas marching band competition. WOW!!! I cant even think of the words to describe how amazing these bands are. I would love to see Logan go up against the likes of Westfield, L.D. Bell and Stephen F. Austin. I think that they are all on a par together.

I got to sit next to the world famous Allen Irons, which was awesome to compare notes against. Of the 14 finalists we each predicted 12 correctly (which is amazing). But predicting final outcomes I only predicted 3 out of 14 correctly.

I can not believe the caliber at which Texas marching bands are competing. It was like watching drum corps with woodwinds.

My favorites for this weekend (San Antonio)

Westfield-
I thought that this show was very artistic. I thought starting before the announcer thing that Cadets did this summer was really cool. Amazing dark sound from low brass. Colorguard was a little dirty due to the complexity of their work, but achieved at a high level. It will be interesting when Winterguard rolls around, as I think that many of the colorgurads are in contention for the open class title in WGI, including Westfield. The bassoon feature (8?) on top of the stages was absolutely word class. And in the closer, the Concert French horn feature was phenomenal. They had one of the most unique sounds of the evening.

Predicted Placement: 2nd
Actual Placement: 1st

L.D. Bell
I thought their uniforms looked traditional, but had a great effect against the turf. Amazing music, I think they played Medea (sp?) Colorguard had really bright uniforms, with flags to match and spun well. L.D. Bell had a much better performance in Finals, (despite the lower placement). Bell had great drill, intervals were amazing. I predicted for Bell to win finals, but I was very happy with the results.

Predicted Placement: 1st
Actual Placement: 2nd

Stephen F. Austin
What a sound that comes from this band. I was a little distracted due to their lack of Colorguard, but the "Angels" dance team was great. I thought that they had a little bit more traditional drill and overall feel to their show than most of the bands that night.

Predicted placement: 4th
Actual Placement: 3rd

Ronald Reagan
I think that reagan had the best show concept of the night. they were able to take some of the traditional (sometimes overplayed) classical songs and make them amazing. I was never bored during Reagan's show. After prelims I had them predicted to be 1st (actual after prelims was 3rd), but due to feedback during a part of their show, I was very distracted. Very unfortunate that things like this happen at big shows. I loved the magic plume trick. (their plumes change color from black to bright pink, and back to black) I think that Reagan had some of the best solo performers of the night. I also thought that Reagan had some of the most innovative drill of the night. Reagan's colorguard was a little dirty in moments, but Great overall.

Predicted placement: 3rd
Actual Placement: 4th

Winston Churchill
I was amazed by the amount of flare they had. It was almost like a Texas version of RBV. No, they didn't have holographic gauntlets, but they sure had gas masks, and exploding barrels of toxic waste. Great GE and Music. The colorguard was much better in finals, although they had more individual errors in Finals. I was very impressed by they way they spun on-top of the barrels. Very clean flag line. Great drumline and even better brass line. One of the more entertaining shows of the night, that kept your attention.

Predicted placement: 6th
Actual Placement: 5th

The Woodlands
Another great show. I felt a little distracted by the prop people that carry around those 3D cubes the whole show. I thought that times there was too much going on at once. But I thought that their colorguard was one of the best of the night. I think that they will be a major contender for the Open Class title(WGI). From the moment the show started I was captivated by the tone of the music they were playing. Great solos!!! Some of the most innovative and well performed drill designs.

predicted Placement: 5th
Actual Placement: 6th

Cedar Park
What and amazing brass line. With a show called "Claustrophobia,” this band had the most memorable music of the night. The 8 piece all brass ensemble that plays in the ballad was absolutely amazing. The tone that came from them was unreal. The colorguard was dirty in spots, but good overall.

Predicted Placement: 11th
Actual Placement: 9th

Richland
Again, a very classy group. I love the uniforms of both the guard and band. I thought that the Colorguard had a slightly better performance in prelims, but I still think that they were one of the better guards of the night by far. I think that they too have an excellent shot at the open class title(WGI) The band was a little more quiet than some of its competitor, but they had amazing balance with virtually no “Stick-out’s.” Congratulations to Jed and Bill, amazing brass. By far one of my favorite shows of the night.

Predicted placement: 12th (tie w/Cy Falls)
Actual placement: 13th

Cypress Falls
Really cool show concept about electricity or something. Great visual effects created by the elastic that the band manipulated. I thought that the colorguard girls that got rolled out by the giant reel (supposed to look like and extension cord I think) was phenomenal. I applaud the bravery of those girls that held on and were rolled on to the field. I think this is one of the coolest effects I have ever seen. Great dance by the band in the techno/drumbreak section.

Predicted placement: 12th( tie w/ Richland)
Actual placement: 12th

Overall my eyes were opened to a completely new world of marching band. I had no idea how good these High Schools actually were. I was not surprised at all by the results and was very happy by the victory of Westfield. I thought that they were one of the most classy groups of the evening and deserved the title. I know that Allen has a ton of notes that will probably be a ton more informative. Overall a great weekend of band and colorguard.

You are right on these points. All of us were nervous. But all of the Ayala Parents and Boosters could not have been any prouder of the band. The kids are amazing and handled the situation quite well. We can talk about scores and judging and blah blah on these forums but its all about the way the kids perform and enjoy the experience.

One thing several of us noticed was the attitude of the Texas bands. It was an an attitude of confidence and not arrogance. They came on the field as if they owned it and it was up to you to take it away. I was quite amazed at some of these Texas bands.

Side note: most of the AAAA bands in WBA use powered pit trains to bring the pit on & off the fields so we are all used to it. But it was quite funny explaining to the BOA Field official how we were going to put the pit on the field as most of the texas bands push all of their props and pit.

" Your going to do what?"

We had a great time. Thanks Texas and the BOA for all of your hospitality especially McArthur High School, you guys really know how to roll out the red carpet!! :D

Americas was robbed

Post by cougarparent » Mon Nov 03, 2003 9:28 am

Etiwanda won the BOA Western Regional and it was deserved but by far the second best band there was Americas. The music was performed beautifuly and the marching was extremely clean with great effects. I spoke with many people after the performances and they agreed with me. The bands that finished ahead of Americas had fine shows with great music but the marching and music were not on par with Americas.

Hey Derek, it was nice to meet you and your friends! (They were sitting behind me, and has some interesting thoughts on the bands.) It was indeed fun to compare our notes. Derek, thank you for the insights on your favorites that night. Though we both pretty much hit the target predicting the 12 out of 14 bands that made finals, I will admit you did better than me predicting the outcomes for finals. (I had Richland in 12th, and Stephen F. Austin in 3rd, and that's it!) That just goes to show you how fierce the bands that night. Any band in the top 5 could have won it.

My review is coming, and like you wrote I have lots and lots of notes, so it will take some time. Congratulations TO ALL of the bands who made an appearance at the Bands of America Super Regional Championships, in San Antonio. Indeed, one SUPER show.

Cougarparent,
I'm glad that you went to the Phoenix show, and thought that there were some very good performances on the field that night. However, I can tell you with certainty that if the ENTIRE panel of judges put El Toro in 2nd in ALL captions, Coronado in 3rd, Bel Air in 4th, Upland in 5th, and Americas HS in 6th, that one would be hard pressed to disagree with the judges, knowing that they have decades of experience in the activity as PROFESSIONALS. You simply don't put a 2nd place band in 6th BY ACCIDENT. I can sympathize with your feelings as a parent...of course we all want to see "our" group in the placement that we want.
In DCI, people LOVE the Bluecoats....a very crowd-pleasing show every year. However, they're not gonna win DCI anytime soon, because they're DIRTIER and don't have the same level of construction in their program as BD, SCV, Cadets or Cavaliers. Period.
I can speak with authority on this subject as an educator, judge, and instructor in DCI and for HS bands, including one on Saturday in Phoenix that soundly beat all of the Texas bands.
