Jull, Norfleet and LaGrone Design 2004 Oregon Crusaders

Jull, Norfleet and LaGrone will design the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps’ 2004 production. All three bring unlimited talent and knowledge to the Oregon Crusaders as the organization prepares for an exciting new season.

Kurt Jull is returning for his second year as visual designer for the Oregon Crusaders. Jull, has over 20 years of experience in the pageantry arts instructing, designing and adjudicating. Notably in drum corps, Jull has instructed and designed for the Madison Scouts and Seattle Cascades.

Jull’s current involvement does not end with the Crusaders, but carries to Evergreen High School of Vancouver, Washington where he is the guard caption head. Year round, Jull is busy with other guards and drum corps across the globe. Jull pointed out, "The Oregon Crusaders is an outstanding Northwest organization that is growing daily." Jull went on, "I am so proud to be asked to contribute to their great future."

Lewis Norfleet will be brass arranging and is no stranger to the Northwest marching arts scene. Norfleet received his degree in music education from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Eventually he would become Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. During the past several drum corps seasons, Norfleet worked with the Seattle Cascades and aided in their rise through the ranks of division II/III to open class status. "I am looking forward to building another successful drum corps in this area," Norfleet said upon accepting to arrange for Crusaders.

Currently Norfleet is the Director of Bands at North Salem High School in Salem, Oregon. As an active arranger, his works are being published by Matrix Publishing Company and performed by high schools, colleges and universities around the country. This is Norfleet’s first season with Crusaders.

Also in his first season, Ronnie LaGrone as the Crusaders’ percussion arranger. LaGrone received his bachelor of arts degree in percussion performance and computer science from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. Since locating to Oregon, LaGrone is working on finishing his masters degree in music education.

LaGrone has instructed with drum lines from such programs as the Grenada High School of Grenada, Mississippi, Oregon State University of Corvallis, Oregon and Northern Lights of Portland, Oregon. He is presently the band director at Five Oaks Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon and teaches as percussion and arranges for Westview High School in Portland, Oregon.

Now that the design team is in place, the Corps is finishing on filling out the instructional staff and preparing for membership auditions in early December. This year, the Crusaders aim for an even more competitive unit and will be appearing for the very first time at the Drum Corps International World Championships this August.
