how many instructors

Post by ellise edwards » Tue Mar 23, 2010 7:56 pm

change there show from one week to the next week and to compete in a show and still expect there guard to remember it and get and place in the top four.

This a survay, so a comment back would really be appreciated.

Changes are made every week. Sometimes the day of the show.

In general, I try to give the kids a mostly complete show by mid-season with no major changes after that. I like doing that for two reasons;

1) I think it's already enough of a challenge to get them to that place where they're confident in the work and actually "performing" rather than obsessing about the counts and the mechanics of the whole thing. Major rewrites til the last minute almost ensure they never get to that place.

2) I like to maximize the kids opportunities to walk away feeling like they nailed it. If the show is in flux until champs then one shot at nailing it is all they get. For most kids that's just not enough chances.

I don't make major changes after mid-season, I tweek minor things right up until the last show before champs and make no changes at all during the week leading into champs.

I always try and make sure that my groups can be successful in performance. If a change is made from one week to the next, it's done at the very first rehearsal of the week to give them the week to perfect it. No major changes after the middle of the season, and only major changes early on if there's a consistent problem or I'm seeing that something isn't translating well visually or clearly isn't achievable by the end of the season.

The ONLY time I made a "day of" change was to a solo that the soloise was really struggling all week with an element and we dialed it back so she felt more comfortable. We did, however, add the element back in the following week in rehearsals.

That said, some groups adapt better than others to show changes. I think it's a matter of knowing whether your students can handle multiple changes close to a show or not.

We seem to always change things up until the end but always small things. Instead of this leap, do a different leap. Instead of this toss doing a different toss. Sometime we change around catch positions or poses. Nothing too difficult. No form changes or anything like that. We're always done with our show by Armijo and after that its just tweaking thing to enhance what they already have.

Ask the people on Tri-Valley's team....their instructor changes things all the time.

I would have to agree with Miss A.

I'm sorry if you're not having a good time with our show...

We are doing a big change in a section of our show with the guard I teach, starting this past Monday, but we never do anything overall too hard to learn, because it will hinder the show rather than improve it.

I hope things will be ok with your guard, Elise, and we look forward to competing together Saturday!

It depends heavily on the particular students in the guard. I had two colorguards this year, the B guard was very dedicated, hard working, but not as experienced.

**WORST CASE SCENARIO**
For the first competition of winter season this year, one of them didn't show. We rewrote the entire show (changed counts, drill, and several moves) the day of... It worked with that guard, and they felt that much more confidence in their skill level because of it. We kept the new version of the show for the rest of the season minus the one flake kid.
** **

99.995% of the time I am absolutely against this though. This is supposed to be about the education of colorguard, they need to learn something, then learn how to refine it. I have a rule with my kids that I will not add anything at the last rehearsal.

I change my shows all the time. They need to grow and advance with the students growth. Personally, I try to avoid doing any major overhauls after Wednesday if they have a show that weekend, that way they have a couple days to absorb and get comfortable with everything
