Post by Starky » Sun Oct 26, 2003 2:56 pm

I was just wondering what you guy think about marching bands doing a drum corps show?
There is no reality in the absence of observation.

I would find it interesting to see mainly because drum corps have no woodwinds. What would they do with all those other marchers???

Oh jeez...of course you're going to have to arrange the horn book differently as to give the "woodwinds" parts.

There are actually many bands that attempt to pull off drum corps shows...I think one of the bands locally that does this on a yearly basis is that of Oak Grove...With Chris Moura as thier director and a heavy SCV influence behind him, over the last few years they have been known to do knock off drum corps shows from Cavies, and Vanguard.

Not too uncommon though. More of what you see are the ideas from drum corps shows transfered into that of marching band. Example: How many bands did you see after DCI 2002 doing "Fight Club," or a close rendition? This is just a visual example. Probably because i'm a visual guy. :-)

Yeah, it's a very, very common thing (I still remember Amador Valley HS from Pleasanton doing "City of Angels" many years ago -- based off the 1992 Madison Scouts show). And need we mention how many drum corps shows James Logan HS has riffed on?

However, it's also somewhat common for drum corps to rip off band shows. I'm sure many hardcore drum corps fans would consider this blasphemy, but it's the truth. Carmel HS of Indiana did a "Fight Club" sequence in the Fall of 2001, and sure enough the Cavaliers did it the Summer of 2002 (Richard Saucedo is Carmel HS's band director and the music arranger for the Cavaliers). Also, Tarpon Springs HS in Florida did a show with a bunch of descriptive panels in 2000 or 2001, and that's influenced the Boston Crusaders last two shows (2002 & 2003). Likewise, many of the instructors at Tarpon Springs HS are also on the staff of the Crusaders.

So, it goes both ways.

You can also take a look at James Logan in '98 and BD in '99 (where Ramiro Barrera was program coordinator for BD as well as band director for JL). You can also compare 2002 Magic of Orlando with Lassiter HS (GA) from BOA GN 1998 (Etiwanda and Oak Grove in WSMBC too for that matter).

To answer the initial question for this topic, though, this has been going on for years, not just recently. It's nothing new. This past weekend, I heard yet another band play "One More Time, Chuck Corea."

I heard another group playing "One More Time, Chuck Corea" as well...and they shouldn't have been  But that is a whole different story.

keep in mind that instructors and writers sometimes like to test out their ideas and see it in action before they apply it to a drum corps. corps aren't exactly copying bands.

Well I think that when a high school band ripps off a drum corp, It doesnt make the high school band look very good and it also degrades the drum corp.. Look at Rancho Buena Vista. They played Cadets 2000 "we are the future" (they had a different tittle though of coarse) something something world. But Anyway.. After seing the cadets play that show soooo perfectly and then seeing a highschool band try to do it.. It just doesnt seem very good at all.. I just dont think highschool bands can play the high calibar shows that drum corps can.

How can we not forget when SCV did Phantom of the Opera in 1989, and then about a kajillion (:P) High Schools do it the following years even until present day!

SV is starting to do Cavalier-style music: original, abstract, kinda hybrid. Richard Saucedo composed the first song in our show (Minimally Speaking Part 1: New Rhythmics).
