Re: NFL Football Pool Game II

Post by Hostrauser » Thu Dec 31, 2009 9:25 am

Sunday, January 3
1. San Francisco 49ers
Don Banks: "After enduring 24 losses in their past 25 games, the Rams certainly don't want to win now. If they were to beat the 49ers at home in Sunday's season finale, all it'll do is jeopardize their No. 1 overall draft slot and the chance to land Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh. And that would be the worst loss of all."

2. New England Patriots
Hostrauser: Win and they're the #3 seed, lose and they're #4. Might not make a huge difference in playoff matchups this year, but I just can't see the Patriots not fighting for the highest possible seed.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Michael Silver: "I asked veteran cornerback Ronde Barber on Sunday night to explain what the hell is going on in Tampa, and he attributed much of it to the players' affection for [Head Coach Raheem] Morris. 'We're just finding ourselves!' he wrote via text message. 'One thing you cannot accuse us of is not playing hard. [A lot of teams quit, but] not us. We love our guy too much.' Trailing 17-3 at halftime, Morris, who took charge of the team's defense after firing coordinator Jim Bates five weeks ago, came up with some strategic wrinkles to help the cause. 'Great adjustments,' Barber said. 'A couple of defenses that we never even practiced, and guys were just buying in.'"

4. Carolina Panthers
Don Banks: "New Orleans' shocking overtime loss at home to Tampa Bay only confirms the sneaking suspicion I've had for about four weeks now. Namely that Sean Payton's once-invincible Saints played and won their Super Bowl when they turned in that near-perfect performance in trouncing the Patriots on the Monday night of Week 12. Since then? Struggles to win at Washington and Atlanta, and a pair of home losses to Dallas and, gulp, the 3-12 Bucs. Blowing a 17-0 lead at home against Tampa Bay is a loss that should set off every possible alarm bell in New Orleans...Allowing the Bucs to hang around this game is an indication that New Orleans is rapidly losing air from its balloon...But New Orleans is showing all the signs of a team that has already played its best football."

5. Pittsburgh Steelers
Tim Graham: "[Where is] the Dolphins' sense of urgency? For the second game in a row, with their postseason hopes at stake, the Dolphins got mugged at the opening kickoff and couldn't fully recover. The Texans scored the first 27 points Sunday. A week earlier, the Titans rolled up a 24-6 lead in the third quarter and endured a 15-point fourth-quarter rally before winning in overtime."

6. Cleveland Browns
Paul Kuharsky: "Stock falling: Jaguars pass defense. Free safety Reggie Nelson was benched in favor of Anthony Smith, but that was hardly a shake-up that produced a big effect. A combination of a toothless rush and loose coverage helped assure the Jaguars dropped to 7-8 in New England. Tom Brady completed 23 of 26 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns. Randy Moss ran open for big plays and Wes Welker caught all 13 balls that came his way. The Jaguars were not credited with a quarterback hit, let alone a sack."

7. Minnesota Vikings
Jerome Bettis: "I have to wonder about the New York Giants. They gave up 41 points at home with a chance to go to the playoffs. I saw a team that was in total disarray. I saw a team that went out there and looked like they didn't want it. It looked like Carolina was the team going to the playoffs. The Giants let a guy run 200 yards on them. It just seemed they weren't prepared and didn't look prepared. You're not supposed to get dragged around your own stadium. You've got to question the leadership in the Giants' locker room. And you've got to question the coaching."

8. Buffalo Bills
Jerome Bettis: "I see both sides of Jim Caldwell's decision to pull Peyton Manning and key starters from Sunday's game. But I am of the belief that you pull them only if the game is out of your control. If it's a 15-10 game, I just don't think you pull them...You definitely try to win the football game...I get that going undefeated doesn't mean much if you don't win in the playoffs, so you have to have a plan. But the effort the Colts put forth to win that game should have been a little more than I saw on Sunday. If nothing else, the Jets were a great test for the Colts to get playoff-ready. They were playing against one of the best defenses in the NFL. They could have really tried some things, seen how their offense stacked up and learned a lot."

9. Chicago Bears
Don Banks: "I haven't seen Jay Cutler have that kind of fun in a while, have you? His play Monday night against the Vikings was the kind of game both he and the Bears envisioned when he hit the Windy City like a rock star last April."
Hostrauser: Yeah, it's amazing what happens when you give the QB time in the pocket.

10. San Diego Chargers
Peter King: "Philip Rivers has been as clutch a player as there's been in the league over the past two months--and because he has the best set of offensive weapons in the game right now. It's been a long, strange trip for San Diego. Think back to the Chargers losing by 10 at Pittsburgh and 11 at home to Denver in October. They were 2-3. The Greatest Team on Paper was dissolving--again. Norv Turner was 12 weeks from the unemployment line. Since then, San Diego's won at Denver, at the Giants, at Dallas, and by 25 against a Tennessee team that had won seven of eight, playing on a short week. Turner's done this while juggling offensive gameplans with a running game averaging a paltry 3.3 yards a pop, and subbing most of the season for a center, Nick Hardwick, who's as important a pivot as on any other line in the league, with the exception of Jeff Saturday in Indianapolis. Turner, who is more often a punching bag in the media than a praised coach, deserves some props for his role in the Charger revival."

11. Tennessee Titans
Paul Kuharsky: "The Chargers did great work against the Titans, and still Johnson managed 142 rushing yards and another 37 receiving. While his touches have increased, he’s shown no signs of wearing down. On a Sunday when six games involving at least one AFC team have playoff implications, Titans-at-Seahawks won’t be one of them. Still, the game will draw a lot of interest. Johnson’s got a shot at becoming the sixth player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season (he needs 128 yards). He needs just 75 yards from scrimmage to eclipse Marshall Faulk's single-season record in that category (2,429 yards in 1999). Johnson needs 234 yards to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record (2,105 yards in 1984)."

12. Baltimore Ravens
Hostrauser: 31st out of 32 in points scored. 31st out of 32 in total offense. 27th out of 32 in total defense. 30th out of 32 in point differential. And yet the Raiders have a record equal to or better than eight other NFL teams. How on earth did Oakland make it to 5-10?

13. Dallas Cowboys
Hostrauser: Philly lost their starting center, Jamaal Jackson, for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL suffered against Denver. So it's exactly the wrong time to have to play Dallas: Cowboys' DT Jay Ratliff is a young superstar playing as good as anyone in the NFL at his position right now.

14. Arizona Cardinals
Mike Sando: "The Cardinals have improved their record every season under Ken Whisenhunt. They made a three-game improvement to 8-8 in 2007, Whisenhunt's first season. The team went 9-7 in 2008 and Arizona will finish no worse than 10-6 this season after beating the Rams in Week 16. Arizona and Minnesota are the only NFL teams to improve their records in each of the last three seasons. This will be the Cardinals' first season since 1975 without back-to-back defeats."

15. Kansas City Chiefs
Hostrauser: Just a hunch. In their last meeting, Denver ran up the score (including going for it on 4th-and-1 in the red zone when already up by 21). I know the Chiefs want payback.

16. New York Jets
Peter King: "It's hard to quantify defensive stats, but I like the way Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders thinks. He has built a database that illuminates some dark statistical positions. At cornerback, for instance, interceptions are often not the best measurement if the player is not being thrown at much. So Schatz keeps numbers on the other important stats for defensive backs--average yards allowed by team to No. 1 receivers (figuring that many corners will match up on the opposition's best wideout), average yards-after-the-catch allowed to opposing No. 1 receivers, and, to measure physicality, run tackles by cornerbacks. In average yards allowed to top receivers, the Jets lead the league by a wide margin at 30.5 yards per game--and that's almost always been Darrelle Revis' man...In average yards-after-the-catch, the Jets are first, at 2.6 yards...[Revis has] been matched against Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Marques Colston, Steve Smith, Roddy White and Reggie Wayne a total of seven times, and he hasn't allowed a 70-yard game. He's been the definition of shutdown corner. He combines wily coverage with a physical presence, and, at 24, there's not a young defensive player in football I'd take over him."
