Summer Band Camp

Post by MaestroOfBandX » Fri Aug 07, 2009 1:19 pm

For those that are not in a year round program, what is your schedule for summer band camp? How many weeks and how many hours a day do you have rehearsal?

Also, does your band have a weekly rehearsal all summer or do you just start back up the last couple weeks before school starts?

Drum Line meets once a week all summer (so we can pay our instructor...) Band Camp runs for 2 weeks with a mini-camp for first timers the weekend before. The first week of band camp coincides with the last week of summer school. So this year...

August 8-9 1-4 First timers camp
August 10-14 1-6 Week 1
August 17-21 9-5 Week 2

Band camp for the group I semi-consult with in So Cal is two weeks in August:

Mon and Tues of week one are freshman only (band and guard)
Wed-Fri full band and guard
Mon-Wed full band and guard
Thurs uniform hand out

9-4 is the schedule with an hour for lunch.

No rehearsals (at least organized) the other parts of the summer.

Our Band Camp is already over, as we have already started school this week! However, it was a week and a half with the first day being for underclassmen and went from 8am-6pm.

June 15-17: Freshman Camp; 2pm-4pm
June 25, July 9, July 16: Rehearsals; 6pm-9pm
August 10-14, 17-19: Band Camp; 8am-4pm (lunch:12-1)

And I do believe that the color guard has their own camp before actual band camp, but I don't know when.

Fremont HS:

Wed Aug 12-Wed Aug 19th(minus Sunday)-1-9pm full band.
Guard meets 9-9 the first half of camp. The last day is also 9-9 for the full band...

I have to say, being a total parade person... I'm starting to like this field show thing(from a guard standpoint, not musically). =]

Our schedule is as follows:

The first week of summer we have freshmen band camp Mon-Thurs, 4-8 with all members attending on the last day.

In July we have a weekend camp which is Friday-Sunday, noon to 9 on Friday and Sunday, 9-9 on Saturday

Band camp is three weeks (Mon-Fri) noon to 9, but the last week in only Mon-Wednesday with parent performance Wed night and Thursday (last day) we rehearse 8-noon, then go to the beach for fun.

Guard and percussion hold 4-6 other rehearsals...usually 6-8 hour blocks.

Hope this helps,
Mark Stone, Ayala High School

We just finished our first week.

We are going from Aug. 10-22
on MWF we go from 8:30-5 and Tues. & Thurs. 8:30-8pm.

Umm usually we get the kids to march and play the parade march and learn the drill and music to the first 2 songs of the field show.

On Saturday Aug. 22nd we will have a BBQ/potluck where the students perform what they learned in front of family/friends/alumni.

So far its going great!, we had to learn the music/drill backwards though because the publisher sent us 3 of the songs and not our opener which we finally got today and so they learned the drill to the first song, learned the 2nd song and just got the music to start going over the drill they learned from the 1st song Monday.. confused yet? lol but they did great! and next week we just clean it up.

So after a few responses here, another question to tag onto this....

At band camp, how much of your show do you get through?

Just to note, currently our band camp is two days for new members, then everyone has 7 days of rehearsal 9-5 and one day 9 to noon. Nothing else for the rest of the summer.

Depends on the year.... Usually, I teach the show from end to beginning and try to get at least half on the field during band camp. This year, we are going from the top and shooting for 2/3. This year's show was designed with layers of complexity. We hope to have the "basic" level, full show by the end of September, then move to the next layer.

Don Lugo summer band camp - two weeks before school starts - 6 hours a day.
8-11AM and noon-3PM. We also hold a incoming freshman camp for three 3 hour days at the beginning of the summer. We have two hour music rehearsals on Wednesday nights during July as well.
