Hostrauser's DCI "Decade" Power Rankings, 2009

Post by Hostrauser » Fri Aug 14, 2009 3:31 pm

It's that time again...

These rankings are an average of the adjusted Championship week final (not necessary FINALS) scores over the past ten years. Both World and Open Class are judged on the same scale for balance.
Requirements for the Decade rankings is as follows:
EITHER at least five seasons with judged performances at DCI Championships in the past 20 years, including two within the past 10 years
AND/OR judged performance at the most recent DCI Championships.

Also, after select corps are three numbers, (A/B/C). These represent A) number of DCI Titles, B) number of Top 5 finishes, and C) number of Top 12 finishes in the past ten seasons. Without further ado...

(See the 2008 edition here.)

Well, lemmie guess....with wins in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1999...yes, why don't you go ahead and post that one too. And while you're at it, 30 yrs would be pretty cool...1980, 1982, 1986. Although the boys in maroon did reel off their three-peat 83-84-85...(1976, 1977, 1979). Now don't go any further than the 70's please!!!!

Let's end this right now. The Concord Blue Devils people...BD, Devs, Blue Smoke. ( I usually hate ranking like these, but boy I really LOVE this one!!!!)

Can't do 30-year rankings until 2013. The tick system lead to some big gaps and weird variances in scores. 8-)

20-year rankings are a little different.

These rankings are an average of the adjusted Championship week final scores (not necessary FINALS score) over the past twenty years. However, the goal of the 20-year rankings is to also reward longevity and consistency of excellence: -1 has been subtracted from the ranking for each season a corps did not have a judged performance at DCI Championships. Both World and Open Class are judged on the same scale for balance. DISCLAIMER: I'm confident that I have scores for all World Class/Division I corps; however, due to the sheer number of corps that disappeared in the 80s and 90s, there may be gaps in the rankings (more specifically, with corps who did not attend Championships every year, but only here and there, I may have missed a score or two, particularly in the Division II/III ranks in the early 90s).

Requirements for the 20-year rankings is as follows:
EITHER at least five seasons with judged performances at DCI Championships in the past 20 years, including two within the past 10 years
OR a judged performance at the most recent DCI Championships
OR a DCI Finals appearance within the past 20 years.

Also, after select corps are three numbers, (A/B/C). These represent A) number of DCI Titles, B) number of Top 5 finishes, and C) number of Top 12 finishes in the past twenty seasons. Without further ado...

Hostrauser's Cumulative DCI RANKINGS, 1990-2009
-----(1-12)---------------------
97.134 Blue Devils (7/20/20) (only corps to make Top 5 every year of the past 20 years)
96.795 The Cadets (5/19/20)
96.713 The Cavaliers (7/19/20)
94.086 Phantom Regiment (2/14/20)
94.069 Santa Clara Vanguard (1/13/20) (kinda hard to believe Vanguard only has one title in the past 20 years, isn't it?)
89.416 Madison Scouts (0/3/17)
88.976 Bluecoats (0/2/19) (another season like 2009 and Blooo will pass Madison as the better corps over the past 20 years)
87.303 Crossmen (0/0/15)
86.921 Blue Knights (0/0/15)
86.080 Glassmen (0/3/15)
84.486 Boston Crusaders (0/2/11)
82.301 Carolina Crown (0/2/14)
-----(13-17)--------------------

Hostrauser is my new VORE!

Don't we all feel just a little bit better sleeping tonight KNOWING that what we believed in our hearts is backed up by pure, no-nonsense, hard, cold, scientific fact? The beauty of the formula, the ease with which it is spoken, just look at the way the "A/B/C" numbers lie just to the right of the name...it's perfection.

Can we do a little sports dynasty comparison. I mean, how many sports teams can boast 13 titles in 33 years? Even the Yankees go WAY back to get their 26. That would actually be fun to see a compariosn like that...

Thanks oh Wise One!

Edit: Ooops... just realized its a 20 year list, even though the header says "1900 - 2009"

Not to be a total party pooper, but...

1923-1953 Yankees: 31 years, 16 championships
1957-1976 Celtic: 20 years, 13 championships
1953-1979 Montreal Canadiens: 27 years, 16 championships

But yeah, the Blue Devils can fit in that group.
