What do you do when someone walks in between your ranks?

Post by floating 8s » Wed Oct 22, 2003 10:30 pm

SO what do you other drumlines do when someone walks in between your ranks? does it mean anything to you? do you just let them by? what are some experiences with this. i know at my school we have respect enough for our drumline that we beat on someone if they break rank. We beat them good. even though our third bass drummer mike sometimes gets a little to carried away... ha. what do you do at your school?

Breaking Ranks...

Post by Eat March Die » Tue Nov 04, 2003 12:18 pm

I don't believe that you can break your own ranks. You're all part of the same group, whether it's the brass, woodwinds, color guard or drumline. One family, ya know? Anyone else who passes through any of the ranks, (unless it's a booster/parent/volunteer member that is more than likely going to be feeding you later...) I have one thing to say...

Castration!

in parade,pre-game,comp,or even in warm up we try not to let anyone through.we don't go all crazy we simply put out our arms so they can't cross and ask them to go around and if they want act like a jerk then so be it.our drummers like to form a chain to it's like inpossible to go through.one time we were sretching and getting ready to do a parade and ppl were going around us but, 3 guys decide to go through and one or the guard members says "what u think your special?everyone went around!" lol it was great! and at pre-game the security guards make sure no one goes through or in front of us it's great!!lol :D

Walking Through Your Rank

Post by LBRSR » Fri Nov 07, 2003 4:55 pm

When I was in the LBJCB drum section, in the 70's, we never let anyone walk through our ranks. That showed disrespect. If someone was caught starting to initiate a walk through, we would straight arm them to the chest and push them away and tell them to go around. If they insisted upon crossing through, they would get hit with snare sticks, as well as tenor and bass mallets (and hard too!!!). Unfortunately, times have changed and it really doesn't happen that way anymore, at least with LBJCB.

At San Benito we are taught to do whatever it takes to knock intruders out of our ranks. Of course we also make the exception for volonteers and what not. Sometimes when we play at our school dumbass kids think its funny to run through the block but the last one got his arm broken so thats basically what we do.

At Murrieta Valley the whole band makes sure nothing gets through. I make sure of it. I have tackeled 2 people to the ground, elbowed one chick in the head, and kicked countless other. Even our floutests get in on the action. Its especially bad after football games when we march back to the band room past the main stadium exit.

No one really does it, but if they do, we trip them, and the drummers hit them with their sticks.

ive rammed numerous people with my snare drum while marching to and from performances. I was told as a freshman never to move for anyone, and i tell the same to my drumline now. If anyone decides to walk through us or slow down infront of us, we plow straight through them. its always nice hearing a "holy sh*t, did you see that guy hit me?" another good way to scare people is to play a cadence while marching. a drumline playing(especially clean) is much more intimidating. People learn from others mistakes.

oooh hahah i yelled at some freshman for letting ppl through at our homecoming game, i told them that you never NEVER break lines, ranks or anything and that you show respect for the person behind you and for this band, we simply dont allow it because its rude and it makes us look like we dont care if we are seperate or if the band is one unit, i dunno its a pride and respect thing, i dont think its cool to break ranks

My all time favorite memory was when we (Pacific Crest) were in northern cali marching to the stadium, and an unexperienced spectator decided to attempt to break rank. That was problem #1. Problem #2 was doing it in front of our cymbal section. Needless to say the poor innocent spectator got a 20" cymbal to the chest and face  . Oh the good times.
