McCain screwed up way too much during the campaign to have been a viable candidate by the end. I just hope Obama ends up being as good for the economy as his analysts predict.

I don't think McCain lost this election. This all started back in the 2006 elections and it has carried over to the 2008 elections. It's a referendum against Bush and the Republican party.

Well, now the Dems have a mandate and they have absolutely no excuses now. If they don't do the job well, they will be voted out just as fast as they were voted in.

Now, who will fill Obama and Biden's seats in the Senate?

Only if he doesn't do everything he has promised!

You're right, if the sub-prime mortgage crisis hadn't occurred McCain would have won tonight. Bush made some mistakes, but not nearly as bad as the media and the Democrats have portrayed them. The Republican Congress are the ones that really blew it! They got lost with the check book and spent WAY too much money!

The ironic part is that the Dems have been rewarded for the sub-prime problem they created by now being given control of the purse strings. :? The last time we had an totally Democratic controlled government was in the late 70's under Jimmy Carter and that turned out to be an economic disaster. Their tax and spend policy created double digit unemployment, 20% interest rates and a stagnant stock market. Let's hope they remember those lessons and do it different this time, but so far their stated plans are exactly what got Carter in trouble with the economy.

Under Clinton in the 90's we had a Republican Congress that controlled the spending and Clinton was smart enough to work with them and they did a good job with the economy. But they never had to work out of a recession, so Obama will have his work cut out from him. That's why I hope he DOESN'T keep his economic promises. If he raises business taxes the way he claims he would, the economy will really go in the tank! That's what Hoover did in 1932 and look what happened then? I know that all politicians make promises just to get elected, so hopefully he will drop those ideas.

Time will time... I did like Obama's acceptance speech he made tonight, much talk of unity and working together. Let's hope it comes true!

Remember the "Misery Index?" Those 2 words gave Reagan a landslide win in 1980. Remember Bustamante running against Arnold with a campaign slogan of "Tough Love?" Atleast Obama sounds more positive.

That is incorrect. The last time the Democrats controlled all three branches of government was in 1992 during Bill Clinton's election. The Democrats controlled the house senate and presidency for two years.

The Republicans would gain control of the senate and house in 1994, but Republicans would lose a lot of their working majority in the house by time 1998 mid term election rolled around.

As far as the election goes I'm glad to be rid of the corrupt era of the Bush Republican Presidency and all his cronys. McCain never stood a chance with his inabilty to make it all about race. This election proved the power of the minority Americans that voted in droves and put President elect Obama into office. Those minorities will soon be the majority in the next thirty years. This election proved how great America can be sometimes. At least there will be dignity restored to the White House.

OK, I need to specify that I meant with this balance of power. If you look at the total number of Senators and Representatives. In 1992 the Democrats did NOT have a large majority in Congress and did NOT have the power they will have now!

RACE??????? The only people trying to make it about race were Obama, the Democratic Party and apparently you! McCain didn't succeed in making about race because he never tried to do so! There was not one ad or claim produced by the RNC or McCain that used race and I challenge you to reference one here and now! You've been drinking way too much Kool-Aid...

By "those minorities" I hope you mean hispanic voters? Blacks are less than 15% of the population and their percentage is not climbing. America's diversity is a wonderful thing, but don't count on it to make too many changes. Conservative and liberal philosophies do not neccessarily follow racial lines. Most hispanics are very socially conservative and will follow their instincts on most issues. The more successful a segment of the population becomes, the more conservative they become.

:( I was ready to vote for McCain.......until I began to see what his running mate was all about! Sara Palin seemed unaware of the basic problems facing our country, the economy, two wars in the middle east and the serious social issues our country is facing! She clearly thrived when she had a teleprompter in front of her! She was literally a talking head! The biggest concern I had was that she was indeed a heartbeat away from the presidency and with McCain's age that clearly was a major problem for me. In Joe Biden, Obama selected an intelligent individual who is prepared to be the President if something should happen to him. Apparently, many Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and others came to the same conclusions for a variety of reasons yesterday!
Good luck to President elect Obama and Vice President elect Biden!
You have your work cut out for you!

I second Baritoneplayer... however, I wanted and did vote for President Elect Obama.

Sara Palin was a disaster! I saw through it as soon as they named her McCain's running mate. The attempt at gaining Hilary supporters and that she is the gov. of Alaska. That was a HUGE red flag for me. The republican party has been chomping at the bit to get into Alaska and start drilling... Palin in the white house would have blown open that door!

I am happy Obama won. I watched his acceptance speach when he won the senate seat and thought to myself... this guy should run for president! :yeah:
I am NOT too old for this!

I'd rather be Dreaming... in a tree.

People are looking way too deep into this. It is very clear and simple what happened.

1. The Dems could have ran anybody (Gore, Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Hillary, etc...) and have won

2. The Repubs could have ran anybody and would have lost.

It was an election between Obama/Biden and Bush/Cheney. That simple. The Republicans never were able to change that viewpoint of most Americans.

The Republicans also lost trying to be more moderate. That was a huge mistake and myth. Being more moderate hurt them, instead of sticking to their conservative values. The republicans really need a good campaign manager for their candidates. There were numerous open door issues they could have clearly exposed the Dems, especially the sub-prime mortgage crisis.

2010 will really be a wild election year. 2/3 of Congress will be up for re-election, I believe. This time around it was only around 1/3. Let's see how intelligent Americans are. If they don't vote out these politicians who voted for the bailout and are directly responsible for our economic mess, then I give up.

That bailout was the last straw that sealed this election for Obama.

As far as Palin? I think she has a great future. She has accomplished a lot in a very short time, just has Obama has. Here's the mistake McCain made. She is from Alaska. What pull are you going to get from anybody from up there? She could be the greatest person since sliced bread and it still won't help you that much. He needed to select someone from a mainstream state. Mitt Romney should have been one of his choices, or even Hucklebee. Obama did the math and McCain didn't. Obama selected Biden for really one reason, Pennsylvania. Biden being from that area sewed up the northeast and Midwest states for Obama. Once Pennsylvania, and especially Ohio were declared Obama's, this election was over.

Anyways, I am a conservative and I really do hope the party wakes up and remembers what Reagan was all about. So maybe that is the good I can take with the results.

Anyways, the Dems clearly have the gavel now. So no excuses now.

As for his victory speech last night. Please!!! Comparing it to King's "I have a dream" speech and calling it "Yes We Can" historic speech was truly reaching (in kind words).

The power they have now? In 1992 the Democrats had a bigger majority in the house than they won last night. Also as of now they only have 1 more senator than they did in 1992. Its looking like Al Fraken will lose and Alaska will elected a convited Republican felon to their seat. Maybe they will pick up the Oregan seat making it 2 more than 1992. Chabliss the Republican won but may have to go to a run off which in the south favors Republicans.
Bandmaster wrote:RACE??????? The only people trying to make it about race were Obama, the Democratic Party and apparently you!
Um ok. Obviously you didn't follow the election too well and listen to the robocalls put out by the RNC and the McCain camp trying to make his Kenyan roots and race and his father's Islamic religious background and race an issue. Even going as far as calling him a "terrorist" If you don't think that's racist well I guess people just want to see and hear what they want. Nevermind all the classless booing at McCain's concession speech and hecklers shouts of "kill him" at rallies. Don't forget the Robocalls made the day of the election to Cuban Americans in Florida making their race an issue with Obama.

When I said "minorities" it doesn't surprise me you thought I meant hispanic voters. I meant African Americans, Hispanic., Native Americans, and Asian Americans. So that's what I meant by "minorities". Had I meant Hispanic thats what I would have typed... "Hispanic". That minority voting bloc was crucial in Barak Obama's election and his lopsided victories in diverse states as New York and California to name a few. Also its a fact that minority bloc will be the majority in the United States in 30-40 years.

I've said my peace and I'm glad we have a new president. I feel the United States will now get back the respect it deserves as a world leader. McCain lost and many will have different reason to his loss and I have stated mine. With that I'm done here.

The only thing I hope is obama/biden doesn't take away my guns! do whatever you want just not that. I just hope the house/senate remembers what happened when they passed the last AW ban (which Biden authored) and that the SCOTUS ruling on Heller will be strong enough.

The GOP is completely out of touch with true conservatism. The way they run the government is just like the democrats but with a religious agenda.

But in all seriousness, I have mixed feelings about this election. For those that do not know I am a registered republican. I believe in free market and less government. So watching the balance of power shift to a larger government, more spending, left wing socialist ideal scares me. I see more taxes vs. corporations witch will lead to fewer jobs in the US. I see more outsourcing to foreign countries as their workers will take less pay so one again less job and less capital for the US. I see $$ wasted on alternative fuel options that have not been fully proven, will increase the cost of food (sugar and corn) or will be worse off for us in the long run.

On the other hand, part of me is overjoyed that in my lifetime I will see a black man sworn into the oval office. The election show just how far our young (compared to the rest of the world) country has come… and fast to! To any inner city or downtrodden person out there, this should show that anything and everything is possible if you work at it (wait... isn’t that a CONERTIVATE value and ideal... :P ) anyways, here is to the next 4 years of change. Moreover, here is to the second coming of Regan… maybe it will be a black man.

Maybe it will be me…

No, seriously.
