Lake Arrowhead is literally burning to the ground. The fire is jumping from house to house to house to house.

http://www.calfires.com/ has a lot of detailed info (and a good google mashup) on the fires. I'm surprised at how many there are this year. I've been kind of removed from it living on the Central Coast. Yes, we have fires, no there no where near that bad.

good website... but it doesn't show where it's spread to. i know for a fact that the Witch fire from Santa Ysabel is in the Barona reservation and the Guejito fire from Poway is in Solana Beach...

Nope! They stopped the fire and saved the homes in the Bonita and eastlake areas. Great news. the winds have switched to an on shore breeze now. Just have to be careful on the backside of these fires now.

I got evacuated from Rancho Bernardo Monday morning at 5am. I was home for my Mom's birthday and was planning to drive back to Orange County for work Monday morning. I knew over the weekend that my condo in Foothill Ranch was close to the fire but I didn't know the Witch Creek fire would come close to my family's house in Rancho Bernardo.

Monday morning we got the mandatory evacuation notice and got the hell out with little time. It took two hours to get to Mira Mesa and from there we decided to call hotels in downtown SD since it's the most south and west away from the fires. So far we've been living in hotels looking at newscasts and waiting for word about our houses. My parents had the chance to go fetch medicine for my grandparents at our house but had to be escorted by police. It was confirmed that my house is still standing but the whole area is devastated. Two of my high school friends lost their houses.

Now we're just waiting in downtown for word on when we can return to RB. I took off this week from work to help clean up the place.

One thing that irked me is that the hotel I'm in is housing a lot of convention people. A lot of people are in shelters but the corporate business people are taking spots and evacuees are being denied. As I walked by in the lobby I glared at the latte sipping, laptop toting business people. I felt it was unfair to the 350,000 people displaced that they decided to keep the convention going. The worst was overhearing their comments about not caring about what's going on. It boiled my blood to the point that I almost wanted to take that glass of Chardonnay out of their hands and spill it all over their $200 shirt and/or Blackberry.

Anger aside I'm feeling for the residents that lost their homes and those that are displaced.

Sorry, can't agree with you there. Conventions are usually planned months or years in advance and have people arriving from all over the country (or the world). It's not at all reasonable to kill all these people onto the street, or force them to rearrange flights to go back home. They are paying customers like anyone else, and it's just an unfortunate confluence of circumstance that many hotel rooms were booked when the tragedy struck.

Another thing to look at: San Diego is the third-most popular convention site in the United States. The hotels here are almost always partially or completely booked. It's a major part of our economy, and it's the dollars brought in from outside the area by these conventions that will really contribute to the rebuilding efforts.

As much as I hate to say this, I hope we have a mild winter. The mudslides from the hills that have burned are going to be another disaster.
