Nice set! No ballad? Or does "Brass Machine" feature a rubato section? [I'm not familiar with that piece].Ex Nihilo wrote:so what jazz pieces are you guys playing ad what festivals are you doing or have you done?

I love a band that plays Basie charts, might I suggest for a ballad, Basie's "Lil' Darlin'"?

Haha, yeah that PIECE is just killer (sorry, I'm getting really anal about that). I remember the first time I heard our band perform that during rehearsal, it got really hard to get the main melody in the saxes out of my head the entire day. Really just awesome. The judges all loved it too, haha.Ex Nihilo wrote:NICE! i love that song!ZJH wrote:"Birk's Works"

what is the difference between a piece and a song? if there is no difference... Well, excuuuuuse me! I own quite a few Maynard albums, but unfortunately don't own the one with that tune. Personally, my favorite Maynard cut is "Give It One"......Ex Nihilo wrote:brass machine is a li'l diddy by some guy named Maynard Fergueson.JazzGeek wrote:Hey, it's an easy mistake---I know the Basie tune "Wind Machine", which is a bit of a barn-burner. I usually think pieces are played and songs are sung.
My heart's numbered beat
still echoes in this empty room
and fear wells in me
but nothing seems big enough to defend
so im going away, i am going away...

That would be what I was getting at, haha. But actually, I should correct myself by calling them jazz charts rather than pieces. I'm sure they're still pieces, but I'd rather stay true to the genre and call them charts, just like how bagpipe bands call their music "tunes". Lil' tidbit of information for everyone there. ;pRBSnare wrote:Ex Nihilo wrote:what is the difference between a piece and a song? if there is no difference...
