Yeah, I also have the 93 Star show listed as #2 on my list, and the 93 Cadets show (which won) as #10.lhsalum wrote:Hey Phantom...
Just wondering how you have the 1989 Phantom show on your list, but not the 1989 Vanguard Show (which held the record for highest score until last season)
Just wondering what's up with that?
As Sonya said, scores and personal preferences don't have to correlate, but, since you asked for it...
As for the scores: EVERY show in 1989 was overscored. I mean, Star of Indiana scored 95.3 and was in SIXTH!!
As for why Phantom 89 makes the list and Vanguard 89 doesn't... quite simply, Phantom had the better show and should've won. That's my honest opinion. Heck, many people I know thought Vanguard's 88 show was better than their 89 show. Let's go caption by caption...
GE BRASS: Phantom (19.9), Vanguard (19.8), Cavaliers (19.7)
Should've been a much bigger seperation between the corps. Phantom's 19.9 is okay, but I'd drop Vanguard down to 19.7, and the Cavaliers down to 19.5
GE PERCUSSION: Vanguard (14.9), Phantom (14.7), Cavaliers (14.5)
I agree with the order and the spacing, I disagree with the heighth of the scores. Knock 0.2 off from each.
GE VISUAL: Vanguard (19.8), Phantom (19.7), Cavaliers (19.1 - 4th)
I have to wonder about this one. Was the guard taken into account? Fancy "magic" tricks aside, SCV's guard in 1989 was NOT very good (they finished 5th). Phantom's Visual show was better executed, and in my opinion, flowed just as well with their show as SCV's did with SCV's show. I'd drop Vanguard to 19.6.
BRASS PERFORMANCE: Phantom (14.8), Vanguard (14.7), Cavaliers (14.5 - 4th)
Phantom's brass line was simply awesome, one of the all time greats. Vanguard had a very good brassline, but they also had quite a few places where they sounded really, really nasally or stiff. I thought the brass judge was a little too kind on SCV. Drop SCV 0.1.
PERCUSSION PERF.: Vanguard (14.9), Cavaliers (14.8), Phantom (14.4 - 5th)
This was the caption that single-handedly gave the championship to SCV. Okay, Vanguard obviously had the best drumline, and that was Phantom's biggest weakness... but FIFTH? Come on now. Bump Phantom up to 14.6, but leave the others the same.
VISUAL PERFORMANCE: Phantom (14.9), Vanguard (14.7), Cavaliers (14.6)
No arguments at all. The judge nailed this caption.
JUDGES TOTALS:
98.8 Santa Clara Vanguard (19.8+14.9+19.8+14.7+14.9+14.7)
98.4 Phantom Regiment (19.9+14.7+19.7+14.8+14.4+14.9)
PHANTOM'S TOTALS:
98.4 Phantom Regiment (19.9+14.5+19.7+14.8+14.6+14.9)
98.2 Santa Clara Vanguard (19.7+14.7+19.6+14.6+14.9+14.7)
Oh, and although this didn't DIRECTLY factor into the scores like it does now, here's the guard scores from 1989:
98.0 Cadets
97.5 Phantom Regiment
97.0 Cavaliers
95.0 Suncoast Sound
94.5 Santa Clara Vanguard
even with the break down it still doesn't explain why 1989 Phantom is #4 on your list and the 1989 Vanguard show isn't even on it. In your break down you had Phantom 2 tenths better then Vanguard.
Not trying to be a smart a$$, I like both shows a lot, but I would still say Vangaurds overall show was a tad bit better then Phantoms. And yes, we all know Vanguards weakness is colorguard, but when you have the Blue Devils less then 100 miles away, can you blame them?

lol, I could've sworn it was their sops. They have a good guard. But, with BD less than 100 miles away, well, hot dang.. I can't believe any of SCV's captions were ever good. hahahalhsalum wrote:And yes, we all know Vanguards weakness is colorguard, but when you have the Blue Devils less then 100 miles away, can you blame them?

Notice also that I have 1999 Vanguard on the list, but not the 1999 Blue Devils.lhsalum wrote:even with the break down it still doesn't explain why 1989 Phantom is #4 on your list and the 1989 Vanguard show isn't even on it. In your break down you had Phantom 2 tenths better then Vanguard.
The 2000 Cadets made the Top 10, the 2000 Cavaliers did not.
The 1996 Phantom Regiment did, the 1996 Blue Devils did not.
And hell, the 1990 Star of Indiana is the only show from 1990 on the list, and they finished THIRD.
THAT is where personal preference comes in. It's the intangibles. What makes a show stay with a person over the years, long after the scores have been given out.
Phantom's 1989 show has just stayed with me. SCV's 1989 show, while very well-executed, strikes me as relatively unremarkable, especially for a championship show. My rankings are not based off of straight "scoring," either mine or the judges.
Also, please note that I did not march corps, so I have no "allegiance" to any corps. I chose the name "Phantom Phan" simply because it was the 1993 Phantom Regiment show that got me hooked on drum corps. I am a fan of ALL drum corps, and Phantom Regiment and SCV are my top two. Please do not consider me biased or "playing favorites" just because I've honored the group that got me hooked on the activity. If I thought Phantom was the pits in any given year, I'd say so (and believe me, I haven't liked everything Phantom has done).

I really enjoy the Blue Knights. Their movement in the beginning of their opener this year is wonderful, I love it. I think BD's color guard has some of the most energy i've ever seen on a field. They throw down every night. You have to recognize them for that, although, their book is not the hardest out there. They are good, don't get me wrong, not trying to bag on BD. I also really enjoy SCV's color guard. (I must admit I might be a bit biased seeing as how i march in the SCVC guard) I really enjoy watching them perform and seeing what they will do each year. They always hold my attention, I really enjoy them. I'm kinda new to guard, I've only been spinning for 3 years, and even newer to drum corps, I just finished my second season, so don't take my opinions with much more than a grain of salt. Oh! I forgot. I really like Phantom's guard as well.
