You know what scares me more than anything...
I've actually heard myself ON THE INTERNET on Google Video and YouTube...this is NOT right. Scarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry...
And just as a point of worthless trivia for any bonafide band geeks that are still, for whatever reason GOD only knows, READING this stupid thread...
I actually have on cassette tape the very very very very very very first time I EVER announced in a marching band situation. Let me take you down Memory Lane.... <<fade to black, crescendo sounds of a football game crowd....fade up to 1983 Pasadena City College...>>
I was a bonafide band geek myself (still am) and on a perfectly good Saturday night when I should have been, ohhhhh I don't know, maybe DATING A GIRL, I was at the PCC Lancers home football game. Oh no, not to see men grab each other and (as they CLAIM) "tackle" each other...yeah...football is ONE BIG METAPHOR FOR SOMETHING ELSE LET ME TELL YA...anyway, I digress...I was at the game in full geekdom mode to watch the PCC Lancer Band do their half time show. I was a senior at Pasadena High School, so naturally, I knew many people in the PCC Band, including their band director at the time, a one Bob Evenden, who, at 6' 10", gave Tom Landes a run for the money as the TALLEST band director in all the land (side note--Bob is as far as I know still a very successful investor trader doohickey thingamagig at some place like Smith Barney Prudential Gibralter Rock EF Hutton place somewhere)...
I DIGRESS AGAIN...
So, at this football game, I'm leaning back...
Wait a second. Did I mention I brought a GHETTO BLASTER WITH ME to the game to RECORD THE PCC BAND?????
Oh.
I forgot about that.
Anyway...I was leaning back minding my own business, sitting next to the band with a group of friends that apparently agreed with me that instead of dating girls, it would actually be more fun to hang around with each other and go to a city college football game on a Saturday night and FREAKIN' RECORD A BAND'S HALFTIME SHOW!!!
I digress yet again...
So I'm sitting there relaxing, ghetto blaster on my side, when said director Mr. Evenden comes up to us and jokingly says, "Our announcer isn't here tonight. Any of you think you can announce our script for our half time show?" Before I could even FORM a thought to consider the request, I had about a half dozen people simultaneously, as though all possessed of a hive mind, point at me and say, "Turner will do it." Mr. Evenden, having already been my director once with the 1982-83 version of the Official Tournament of Roses Honor Band when I was a junior trombone player (2nd chair by the way--just wanted to throw that in!), looked down at me with steely squinted eyes and grumbled, "You??" Meekly, because of course he was 14 feet tall to me, I squeaked, "Yeah, AND WHAT OF IT!?!?!?" I had a lot of PEP back then to say the least.
So, he hands me a script, tells me under NO circumstances am I to announce PRIOR to them entering the field, and to wait until such and such occurred and to make sure I did this and that and blah blah blah (just like a director to freak out at the last second.......HI DIRECTORS!!!).
And off I went to the pressbox.
And history was made.
Oh...and I left my ghetto blaster down in the stands and told someone to make sure they recorded me....because, I just felt at the time that someday, my ship would come in and I would be announcing the Academy Awards and I'd get allllllllllllllllllllll kinds of offers to do voice overs and radio work and commercials and and and stuff....and Mary Hart from Entertainment Tonight would be interviewing me and ask breathlessly, "Where did it all START for you Ryan!?!?!? WHERE!!??" And I could pull out that tape and say, "My humble beginning..."
But alas....
I'm just the "Voice of Southern California".
Sigh.
And that's how I came to be....22 years later.

Great story. I think I'm going to call up E! True Hollywood Story and see if they'll run it! And as for being just the Voice of Southern California.... it's better than being just the Voice of Outer Southwestern Imperial County, right?Ryan H. Turner wrote:And off I went to the pressbox.
