Jazz performances in the Bay Area????

Post by Barton1 » Thu Apr 06, 2006 2:40 am

I am taking a history of jazz class at Stanford and our assignments include attending 5 live jazz performances. I am from Southern California, so I don't really know what (if any) are the good jazz clubs around here. Please let me know if you have any ideas! My professor said that high school jazz ensembles would be great, so if you are having performances or (even better) festivals coming up, please respond!

Yoshi's in Oakland has a good show almost every night, but I don't know anything about prices.

Pearls in San Francisco is great also, $15.00 at the door, $20.00 in advance.

I also recently googled jazz in San Francisco and came up with some places to go.

San Jose has some places as well. I'm not sure where though.

My spring concert is April 28th, in Santa Cruz.

Check out San Jose State also, try CMEA Bay section for festivals and NCBA for spring band reviews. NCBA has concert and jazz at the spring reviews.

Stanford's Calendar of Events
San Jose Jazz Society
Villa Montalvo upcoming jazz/smooth jazz concerts
West Valley College Music Events (Saratoga)
San Jose State University Music Events
Jazz at Pearl's
Monterey Jazz Festival

The CMEA Bay Area Jazz Festivals are over for the year. You could find out when jazz concerts are put on by Palo Alto HS, Los Altos HS, Henry Gunn HS, etc.

KKSF Earth Day concert coming up

Post by Wildabeast » Sat Apr 08, 2006 8:55 pm

Add this to my previous list:

KKSF (SF Bay Area Smooth Jazz station) has their Earth Day concert coming up on Saturday, April 22nd in downtown San Jose (Cesar Chavez Park, right in the heart of downtown).

It's not a bad deal considering that it's FREE.

Thanks! All of these places are excellent options--this should definitely help a lot!

I also forgot to mention that Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto hosts the Jazz Vespers every 2nd Sunday of the month at 5-6:30pm (you just missed it for April, my bad). It's basically a jazz liturgy in collaboration with musicians from the San Jose Jazz Society.
