Nice, I am the Principle chair at Mt. SAC, and was Principle in All County Honor Band, and I got to lay it, but I have played other stuff, and that is why I belive that anything Whitacre rocks.

BUY THIS CDShorty41 wrote:I like this one we played last year: Florentiner.. or something like that.. I play bassoon, and this piece had cool parts for it like sixtheenth notes and junk.
The USMC Band plays the Florentiner on it, and the low brass in the second strain produces some of the best accents I've ever heard. I just about wet myself the first time I heard it.
It's an outstanding CD all around, btw. The Kozhevnikov Symphony is enjoyable, the recordings of Florentiner, Children of the Regiment, and Farewell to a Slavic Woman are all top notch, and they also give a first rate performance of the Looking Upward Suite, which I think is one of Sousa's best works.
It looks like most of my favorites have already been mentioned, since they are such great pieces! But I will still mention them anyway lol.
My ultimate favorite wind ensemble piece is October by Eric Whitacre. I want to play it soooo badly. I listen to a recording of it all the time, and it sends chills down my back every time!
Next... Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli and Armenian Dances by Alfred Reed. We played these in our wind ensemble last year, and I absolutely loved them!
I also love... Puszta by Jan van der Roost (spelling?). I don't know if you consider that a wind ensemble piece, but it is the most fun and entertaining piece I've ever played!

Out of the ones I've heard, I'd have to say Persis and El Camino Real are my favorites. I also love Russian Christmas Music with a passion. They all have so much emotion in them. Out of the ones we've played though, I'd have to say either Variations on a Korean Folk Song and Vesuvius. They're written so cleverly, and it's just so fun to play them.

Ahhh...reviving the thread.
I'll put some down off the top of my head:
Molly on the Shore
Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral
Rocky Point Holiday
Variations on a Korean Folk Song
Morning Star
Dance of the Jesters
New Century Dawn
O Magnum Mysterium (listening to now, Northwestern University SWE with Mallory Thompson, thanks iTMS) - if you like "October", you might like this one, although not a Whitacre.

Just wondering, who's the composer? Because this year in academic decathlon we studied an "O Magnum Mysterium" composed in the Renaissance period.Wildabeast wrote: O Magnum Mysterium (listening to now, Northwestern University SWE with Mallory Thompson, thanks iTMS) - if you like "October", you might like this one, although not a Whitacre.
