Commemoration Overture (Elliot del Borgo)
Feste Romane (trancription: ???)
The Leaves Are Falling (Warren Benson)
Fetes (transcription of movement from Debussy's "Nocturnes")
Tocatta & Fugue in dm (Hindsley transcription)
Music for Prague, 1968 (Karel Husa)
Hammersmith, prelude & scherzo (Gustav Holst)
Danses Sacred And Profane (William H. Hill)
~~~
Incantation & Dance was a blast once you got it down.
"Elsa's" was simply stunning. If you could keep it in tune, it had a quality of "drenched radiance."
Oh... and avoid the clarinet parts to a march by the name of "E Pluribus Unum." It was a knuckle-buster if memory serves.
Mt. Miguel was something under Dean Immel; Castle Park would do exchange concerts with Mt. Miguel back in the day.Spring-Heeled Jack wrote:Only recently. Mt. Miguel remained a power into the 90s under Roy Anthony.JazzGeek wrote:Castle Park High School - Director Michael Luzak [late 70's]
and I have the albums to prove it.
You have to imagine the stares I got when I went to college [USC] and said: "yeah I played this in high school" when the wind ensemble sight read "Apotheosis". Sadly, both directors retired and the bands' abilities have diminished
to tame the perilous skies by holsinger. the parts weren't neccessarily that hard, but difficult still,m and they went on for a good 12 minutes with no breaks, so it made for some interesting fun. sounds great though. scootin' on hardrock by holsinger is the most fun and most difficult piece i can remeber doing in wind ensemble..
Hard Stuff I've done...
Wind Ensemble...
Satiric Dances and Sea Songs---That was the hardest set EVER. I was impressed when, in San Fran in 2003, we got the award for highest score overall because I couldn't play most of the third movement of Satiric Prances thanks to a stupid cankersore...
Concert Band...
Africa: Ceremony, Song, and Ritual-- Geezalou, this was one of the hardest pieces I've EVER played--and I wasn't even IN Wind Ensemble! There was this part at measure 24 where the piccolo and bass clarinet (that's me) have a duet and I could NOT get the timing down for some reason!
The wind Ensemble the year of Africa (Last year) played Rhapsody in Blue (full, memorized Piano solo by one amazing kid at our school. I was impressed) and Pas Redouble (hated it. lol).
Ouch...yeah, those sores are a pain in the neck. I hate it when that happens.Eunuch Provocateur wrote:Satiric Dances and Sea Songs---That was the hardest set EVER. But there is no tuba part. The tuba was not yet invented in Beethoven's time. So I couldn't have played it, unless it were a band arrangement.
And...
When I was in the Army Band, we used an entire artillery battery for the 1812 Overture. This is an excellent way to build up a good strong fortissimo, since we didn't use an electronic public address system, just natural outdoor acoustics. I stand by what I said.
The two hardest pieces I remember playing in high school were:
Hammersmith (Holst)
Symphony in Bb (Hindemith)
