as for mouthpieces, try as many as possible, stores will usually let you try whatever you want, and that will prevent you from getting a recommended mouthpiece that may not be the best for what you want. selmer c*'s are very popular, but i've played them, and personally hate them. i play on a vandoren jumbo java t55 right now, but it does have some custom work, because it only has half of a baffle, and i use a rovner ligature on it. i also have a yanigasawa metal #5. despite its $270 price tag, it is also very good. my advice is try as many of mouthpieces, and pick what one you like the best.
