Just a question...I have been reading the World of Pageantry website for a year or so--I've often wondered what the problem was with Mr. Campbell at Fairfield--so many things were said on the website, but no one ever said what the problem was, or how it was resolved. Any insight?

So you're a smart one! Image

Anyway...I am a sophmore at Martin Luther King H.S.. I am in their marching band and wind ensemble. I'm 14, (turning 15 on the 26th of this month), and I've been playing the saxophone since 5th grade. That pretty much sums it all up. Image

Phan,

I'm a senior at Madera High and since my freshman year I can remember seeing you at one or more competitions a year comparing your notes to the recap sheets of my band directors (Talbert and various assistants). Seems to me that between Talbert and Stava they've got quite a network of friends, how do you know them?

The first time I saw Madera was at Fairfield many years ago, under different directors, and to be blunt, they weren't good. Several years elapsed until I saw them again at Fairfield, this time under the direction of Dan Talbert and John Stava. They had improved dramatically, it surprised me, and I was complimentary of the group in the review of the competition that I posted on these forums. Dan emailed me and we began chatting. Last fall I hung out with Madera at Fairfield and had the best time, as I did this year at Visalia and likely will this Saturday in Stockton.

Honestly, most of my connections find me. I received numerous emails from band directors in the NCBA with regards to my NCBA commentary (some complimenting me for saying the things they've always wanted to, others correcting my misstatements, others criticizing me for my harshness of tone and very blunt opinions), and have had dozens of insightful conversations with them. I've actually learned quite a lot this way.

I also have to thank Mr. Talbert for helping me in this respect, too. Allowing me to accompany the Madera instructors onto the track during awards ceremony has led me to several introductions and great conversations with other directors.

The UCSD Pep Band folks are great if you want to keep playing. I met a few last year at the Battle of the Bands at UC Davis.
