O ye of the 30th-rated passing offense. Ahead of only the Jets and Bucs.

The days where you could win a Super Bowl with a dominant defense and a game-manager at QB ended about a decade ago. In the playoffs today, you need a QB who can take over a game.

Colin Kaepernick can't throw consistently at an elite NFL level (yet). He's got a cannon for an arm and can launch the ball 90-yards through the air, but he's got the accuracy of a revolutionary war musket. I told my Packers friends all they had to do was not let him beat you with his legs. Of course, that's exactly what happened because Green Bay's defense is pretty putrid.

Still, Kaepernick was only 16 of 31, and that's with several off-target throws that were completions only because the Green Bay DBs couldn't get traction on the icy field to make a quick play on the ball. When I look at what the Niners did against the four top quality defenses they faced this year, I see they went 1-3 and Kaepernick was miserable:
@ Seattle: 13 of 28, 127 yards, 0 TDs, 3 INTs, 1 Fumble
vs Carolina: 11 of 22, 91 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT
@ New Orleans: 17 of 31, 127 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
vs Seattle: 15 of 29, 175 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Let's not forget: Kaepernick threw for UNDER 205 yards in 11 of 16 games this season. Part of that is offensive design... part of that is because he's a decent but overrated NFL QB who defenses have adapted to in his 2nd season. (People make a big deal about Michael Crabtree being out most of the season, I don't want to hear none of it. The Chargers have one good receiver, yet Rivers did great. Heck, Tom Brady of the Patriots has thrown all season to four guys Bill Belichick picked up at the bus stop and been amazing.)

I stand by my statement: Kaepernick can't beat you with his arm. The first defense that shuts down the Niners running game will send them home for the season. And with Carolina, then Saints/Seahawks on the schedule, I'll be very surprised if San Francisco even MAKES it to the Super Bowl, much less wins it all.

Oh, that's fully strategic. If the Chargers win, I'm thrilled. If they lose, at least I have a correct pick here to console me.
