Amongst other disasters, I had FOUR friends and/or relatives diagnosed with cancer in 2009.
2009 wasn't too bad to Melinda and I, but it was terrible to almost everyone around us. Good riddance.

Agreed with Hostrauser ... the whole decade was a disaster. From 2001 to 2009, blech. 2009 was especially a mess with respect to the economy, various close friends and family members dying, major injuries.
