Not much faith in the Miami defense, is there?

Actually, my concern is their offense. The Wildcat fad is pretty much done and gone, and the Falcons blew up their OL last Sunday.

Now that we are into the Regular Season, and face the potential week where a regular player misses the deadline for some reason, I thought I should post a revised BYE rule. For necomers (and those who need memories refreshed), the BYE is an option to use for someone who misses the deadline, and wants to get a score that will keep them in the running for the Season Average. Otherwise, you get a zero for the week in question, which factors in to the Season Average scores/ranks.

REVISED BYE RULE
This year, the BYE rule is revised a bit. First of all, there are now two BYEs available for the season, but the second BYE will be at a decreased value from the first BYE.

A BYE is only available for the Regular Season (weeks 1-17), and not available for the Post Season. It is designed to give breathing room for those who have a busy life and for whatever reason found it impossible to get in and submit your picks for the week. A BYE cannot be used to erase a particularly bad week of picks to declare a BYE instead.

During a split deadline week (such as when there are early Thursday games), once you begin submitting picks, the BYE cannot be used that week. So if you submit partial picks on Thursday, and forget to come back and submit the rest of your picks, you cannot erase your early picks and take your BYE instead. You'll unfortunately have to take "no picks" for the remainder of the week, and will be scored as such.

The BYE value is as follows:
Of all the players submitting picks that week, I will take the average score of those people, and then the BYE will be worth 80% of that average score. The second BYE, if used, will be worth 60% of the average score of those submitting picks for the week.

Sunday, September 27
1. Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens have possibly the most overrated defense in the NFL since Rex Ryan left. They're currently 23rd out of 32 teams in scoring defense (the only stat that matters). The Ravens are also possibly the most underrated offense in the NFL: 2nd out of 32 teams. Of course, not that any of this will matter with the flaccid Browns coming to town.

2. Atlanta Falcons @ New England Patriots
The next time the world's worst loser (Bill Belichick) blows off the friendly post-game handshake, I hope the opposing coach grabs him in a bear hug and refuses to let go. "It's okay Bill, let it out. Let it out." Oh yeah, the game: the Patriots should be 0-2. Pretty much every veteran on their defense retired after last season, and until Tom Brady plays defense, this team will be beatable every week.

3. San Francisco 49ers @ Minnesota Vikings
The upset special. Let's hold off on calling this Favre experiment a resounding success just yet. I still doubt his ability at this point in his career to control a game and lead a team to victory. A pair of victories over two of the worst teams in football (Cleveland and Detroit) also doesn't give us a good gauge on the Vikings. Look for Frank Gore to match Adrian Peterson yard for yard, and a newly aggressive Niners defense to harrass Brett Van Winkle into a couple of JUCO caliber interceptions.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars @ Houston Texans
The opening week loss to the Jets won't look so bad in Houston after a few more weeks. Kurt Warner set the NFL record for completion percentage largely because the Jaguars can't get any pressure on the QB. That's a sure-fire recipe for failure in the NFL, especially since it turns games into shoot-outs and the gun you're bringing is names David Garrard. Oog. Look for Matt Schaub to have a big day for the Texans.

5. Tennessee Titans @ New York Jets
Losing at Pittsburgh is nothing to be ashamed of, but the Titans will regret letting that game against the Texans slip away. Now a floundering team looking for a break has to go on the road and face Rex Ryan's #2 rated Jets defense (which held Tom Brady to under 50% completion rate, with no TDs and a pick). I expect the Titans to give Mark Sanchez some trouble, but it won't be enough.

6. Kansas City Chiefs @ Philadelphia Eagles
I actually debated picking the Chiefs in this one. I don't think they're going to be that bad this season, maybe finishing as high as 2nd in the AFC West. But I just can't. Not at Philadelphia. The Eagles beat both of last year's Super Bowl teams at the Linc in 2008, and while they couldn't slow down the Drew Brees Buzzsaw, they shouldn't have a problem with the Matt Cassel Experience.

7. Green Bay Packers @ St. Louis Rams
0-2 with seven points scored in eight quarters. Losers of 12 straight. 5-29 since the start of the 2007 season (even the Detroit Lions with their 0-16 season aren't that bad: they are 7-27 since the start of the 2007 season). Held under 21 points in an astonishing 28 of their past 34 regular season games. Hope? Why should Rams fans have any hope? This is the karmic price for having Albert Pujols on the Cardinals, I guess.

8. New York Giants @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unfortunately, the new coaches in Tampa didn't get that memo. Instead of sticking with (now-retired) ex-defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin's extremely effective Tampa Two defense, new coach Raheem Morris and defensive coordinator Jim Bates decided to switch schemes. The transition is not going smoothly, and the Bucs have one of the NFL's worst defenses. They might straighten it out as the season goes on, but the Bucs look destined for double-digit losses any way you slice it.

9. Washington Redskins @ Detroit Lions
They've lost 19 straight. They're 1-25 in the past 26 regular season games. But they're going to win on Sunday. Why? Variety of reasons. Stafford, Pettigrew, and Dalmas were all good draft picks, and the team has some young talent. The Lions have a much better coaching staff. And while the schedule was initially unkind, forcing them to open up against two of the NFC's best teams, the Lions now host a Redskins team that has looked absolutely pathetic this season. Jim Zorn is losing that locker room, too. The turmoil in Washington will intensify after the Lions snap their streak.

10. New Orleans Saints @ Buffalo Bills
The Saints have 93 points after two games, scoring 45 and 48 in back to back weeks. No other team in the NFL has even reached 70. Until someone actually stops Drew Brees and Company, I refuse to acknowledge that it's even possible.

11. Chicago Bears @ Seattle Seahawks
Look, we went through this last season: if Matt Hasselbeck is out, the Seahawks are a BCS team. Even when he's healthy they aren't that good. The Bears will be okay. Cutler will produce, and while the loss of Urlacher hurts, it doesn't hurt their defense nearly as much as the loss of Mayo in New England or Jamal Williams in San Diego.

12. Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals
The Steelers' 5th-rated defense isn't their problem. Their 30th-rated offense is. Only the woeful Redskins and Rams have scored fewer points. They can't run the ball at all (there are fourteen PLAYERS that have more rushing yards than the entire Steelers team so far). Big Ben is decidedly mortal in months that don't end in -uary. Slow down Santonio Holmes and/or Hines Ward, and who on this team can beat you? And, of course, the #1 rule of NFL pick 'em: beware the home underdog.

13. Miami Dolphins @ San Diego Chargers
Maybe this is sacrilege, but I could care less when LT comes back. It's time to face facts and realize that he's only the fourth or fifth most important guy on this offense, which has the potential to be really good. The Chargers defense scares the hell out of me. Losing Williams in the middle of that 3-4 defensive fron means teams will just try (and often succeed) to run the ball down San Diego's throat. Merriman's been totally MIA. The pass rush and pass coverage has been spotty. Speaking of facing facts, can we admit now that the Dolphins are a very average team who rode a couple of trick plays and a pillow-soft schedule to the playoffs last season. NFL defenses are ready for the Wildcat, and Miami's schedule is a lot tougher.

14. Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders
You know, as a Charger fan, it's rare that I have sympathy for the Raiders. But I do. Their defense is rock solid. Nnamdi Asomugha is one of the greatest corners I've ever seen in the NFL. But, my god, Jamarcus Russell is the worst NFL QB I've ever seen. EVER. He's even worse than Ryan Leaf. And yet, in his career against Denver he's 31 of 44 for 388 yards, 3 TDs and 0 Ints. Go figure. The Broncos lucked into a win against Cincinnati and beat a hopeless Cleveland team. I'm still not convinced this team (or Kyle Orton) is any good, but Elvis Dumervil is going to be a star.

15. Indianapolis Colts @ Arizona Cardinals
Seriously, does Peyton Manning have an entire clan of leprechauns held hostage in his house or something? No team the past two seasons has won more games they've been outplayed in than the Indianapolis Colts. I don't think either of these teams are a serious Super Bowl threat this year, but I'll take the Cards at home.

Monday, September 28
16. Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys
Can you name one single high-profile game in which Tony Romo hasn't looked like a complete chucklehead? He's in his fourth or fifth season, now, folks: this is who he is. He can pick apart weak teams in meaningless games, but completely wilts when national attention is on him. Speaking of weak teams... Jake Delhomme and the offense will be fine, but the Panthers' defense stinks. Over the last eight regular season games, the Panthers have allowed 240 points (30.0 ppg).
