Bowling

Post by Hostrauser » Fri Sep 05, 2003 2:37 pm

Anyone here like to bowl? I know it firmly establishs me as a lower-middle class individual, but next to music is probably my favorite hobby. If enough people are interested, we should set up a WOP Bowling Day. :D

Anyways, I bowl on a league, have for years. My average is normally around 185 or so, although I averaged 191 over twelve weeks in my summer league. Last night was the first night of my new league, and I started the fall/winter season off with my best series ever. I had games of 210, 236, and 258 for a total of 704, my first 700-series. Yay me. 8-)

(Seven hours until I take off for vacation, so I likely won't be responding to this thread for about ten days.)

I bowl with my fraternities. I'm usually around 100 scoring wise. I suck but I still have fun doing it.

I do sometimes but I'm not to good at it. Probably partly because I don't really bowl that much. It's fun though.

Instead of going to dances and stuff, my friends and I go bowling. It's really fun. My average score is about 55, just kidding. No it's about 105 or so. I'm not that good, but I don't suck. I wouldn't mind having a bowling day. There's just one problem...we all kinda live, well, not in the same place. ROAD TRIP!! a very short ROAD TRIP!!! (lol)

I usually get around 100 as well...but I bowl at least twice a month. The ball always likes to veer to the right when I bowl. It gets me upset.
Though once at some Cosmic Bowling I scored a 200 at 1:00am...

I hardly ever get to go bowling. I usually get 100-130. I suck, but it's fun.

I hate it when you try to bowl so well, and you do okay, but then this hotshot kid comes along and bowls like a 270.

Does anyone here that bowls know how to hook the ball, and do it successfully??

Its an old people's city.

Hey, do you bowl where you place the ball on your forearm and roll it off?

I DON'T know how to put a spin on the ball, wish I did though. My wrist like, spins when I let go of the ball and causes problems and pain for me so I wear a brace when I go bowling.

Yes. The key is to keep your wrist from turning over. It's actually not too hard, just takes concentration and practice. It also helps to BUY YOUR OWN BALL, because it will be custom drilled to fit YOUR hand.

The key to hook is the wrist, but the hook doesn't originate from the wrist. That's the mistake a lot of people make. Chances are, if you bend your wrist and really crank the ball, all you're really doing is putting a lot of ineffective top-spin on the ball. (Or hurting yourself: Liz, if it hurts, you likely need to adjust the way you throw it. It should be painless.) Here's what few tips I can offer without being there in person to coach:

1. The finger-tips should be facing in toward your body at all time.
2. Keep your arm straight (elbow locked) at all times.
3. Follow through (bring your arm up until it looks like you're extending your arm for a handshake with the pins).

Most importantly, you don't need to over-power the ball. Simply let go. If you've done everything correctly, with your fingers facing in, gravity will gently pull the ball off your hand and spin it.
