09/25/78 - PSA Flight 182 crashed in North Park (San Diego) after a mid-air collision…

This photo was taken from the Thrifty Gas Station at University and 805, about two blocks from our house. The photographer was there covering a press conference on the station’s gas tanks that had a new vapor recovery system (now common-place on all gas nozzles).

The PSA Boeing 727 crashed at the intersection of Dwight and Nile and took out over a dozen homes. At the time, my family lived on Dwight; luckily on the other side of the freeway. Still, the plane missed my house by only a few hundred feet. The Cessna that the PSA jet hit crashed on 32nd Street near Polk. Luckily, the Cessna crashed in the street itself, damaging only a couple of parked cars.
Both of these are right across the freeway from where Melinda and I live now, within walking distance of our place.

At the time, it was the worst aircraft disaster in the history of the United States (a position it would only hold, sadly, for a little over seven month).

Wow looks like a warzone, didn't realize how much damage a plane could do.
